I need some advice

I saw a new neuroligist yesterday he seemed good and knew what he was talking about, i havent has any seizures since april last year im managing on 500mg of keppra and for some reason my neuro is putting my doses up to 1000mg. I do not know why has anyone else had this happen? i was on a high dose before and had to many side affects which is why m y dose was put down. Any comments, help or advice would be brill.

Hi crazychick --

It's great to hear that things have been going well with your seizures. If you are doing fine on the 500mg dose, then there's no reason to increase, and you should tell your neurologist that. He can't force you to take more meds. He works for you, not the other way around. Ask him why he thinks an increase is a good idea, and then tell him why you think it's a bad idea. End of story.
 
I tried yesterday, but i think hes testing to see if the hair loss increases on more meds but he said if it does increase to tell him n we can try another med. i know lamotrigine made me really low, hows things with you?
 
It doesn't make any sense for him to play with the keppra dose just to see if side effects increase. If you're relatively happy at your current dose, then he shouldn't mess with it.
 
This is what i dont understand either, hes putting my dose right upto 1000mg. n he shud av it in my notes how bad the side affects where before when i was on a high dose. i dont think any of em know what there doing. hes making me take keppra durin day even when my seizures where only happening in my sleep. am so confused :-\
 
Don't let him do it! Keep calling him to let him know that he's wrong, and that you won't go along with it.

Thanks i will defo be persistant. i want this sorted now. Like you say why put it up if the dose am on is working. it dont make sense does it?
 
You really need to fight for what you know works for you. They had me off my Keppra for the last 2 months. That ended up badly. So I insisted to be put back on 1000 mgs and I feel WAY better. If anything I will probably have another increase because my body seems to handle even up to 2000 mgs. You will always know your body better then the Drs so just let them know what you can and cannot handle. I am so glad you have had no seizure and I hope it stays that way, good luck.
 
If you are happy with your quality of life stay with your current meds.
If you want feel that your life sucks due to your meds, do as the doctor says and try a new recipe.
you could simply tell him you want to skip the increase in keppra and start right away with a new med.
 
Thanks everyone its the side afects which 1 of em is hair loss n i just think if ny dose increses so will the hair loss but my neuro should have all this in previous notes. i just feel like im talkingh to a wall with everyone av spoke to. :-(
 
Did he do blood tests to test the level of Keppra in your blood? This is the only thing I could think of that would be a responsible reason for upping it. And even then, he should be extremely clear on the reason.
 
he rang me day after i got to stay on 500mg n got to go for blood tests this week n see how i go from there, so at least this neuro is listening to me as other one wasnt he was useless.

I can't help as I've never been on keppra (though my main attitude is same as Nak's - the docs work for you not the other way around and they can't force you to do shit)... but... get ahold of Hand of Blood. The exact same thing happened to her and she doesn't know why either. Same drug, same doses... hard to say what's going on but two heads are always better than one...
