Since having the pain my drs are saying is GERD, and having the medications to treat it, which caused seizures, and irregular heartbeats... I was doing some research today, after my father in law told me about the possibility of having a low vitamin b-12. I did alittle searching around and I found that people who take metformin or glucophage, (mostly people who take these drugs have diabeties) I take it for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Ive been taking it for 12 years now, since being dx'd.....studies have shown that people who take the glucophage or metformin for a long period of time, can have a low vitamin b-12. Which causes problems with creating heartburn, something that came up in July for me.

Drs have been trying to treat it with GERD medications, but they havnt been working the best, either they are not fully taking away the pain, or else Im having serious reactions to them.

But after the talk with my father in law, he suggested I get a bottle of vitamin B-12 and try it. So I went to pick up a bottle that has 2000mcg tablets. Ive been taking one a day for the past five days or so. To my suprise, Ive felt different.. but in a good way! Not as much pain, and feeling better. I dont know if its linked to the vitamin b-12 or not. But the last time I quit taking the prescribed medication, It only lasted 2 days and the pain came right back again. Ive been off the prescribed medication now for 4 days and so far so good!

I will def have to bring this up to the specialist Im going to be seeing on December 15th. My primary care dr did a CBC (Complete Blood Count) last week, but everything came back normal. I dont know if they do the vitamin testing in that as well? If not, I am def going to ask to get some testing done to see where that stands and if its at all possible for that to be going on.

I hope Im getting somewhere with this! I feel like Im my own doctor! LOL

Oh yes. I will for sure be bringing this up to the specialist when I see him in a couple of weeks.

Today, I heard back from my neurologist office in regards to the seizures I was having earlier this week. When I told the caseworker about the new medication my primary care dr gave me to treat GERD, how I started it on saturday and by monday I was feeling so different, then came to seizures and irregular heartbeats. She comes back saying...

"Kristin, you do know that stress can cause seizures, right?"...............

Well, yes I do know that. But my question to her was, if I could go from May 6th through November 20th with no seizures, and only being on Keppra XR... then two days after I start this medication, the seizures begin and the other symptoms come about, wouldnt I at least want to look into weather or not this could be caused from the medication? Which I did thursday night after having more seizures during the day that day. I just assumed my primary care dr would know whats best for me since he knows I take Keppra XR for seizures. Well, come to find out, after getting the medication insert paper from the pharmacy, that seizures and irregular heart beat is just two of the serious side effects listed with the medication. What even more leads me to believe it was the medication, was because since I quit taking it, Thursday morning was my last dose of it, I havnt had no more seizures and no more irregular heart beats!

She said she would note that in my chart. But I just couldnt believe she would tell me its from stress! I didnt know weather to laugh or get upset by that comment. Im a mom of three little boys, I take responsibility of the bills, household duties, etc... and Ive been doing that for years now. If it was stress related, I would be having seizures every day! LOL

My former neurologist sent me 5 pages worth of info in the mail about low B-12 and suggested I start taking 5,000 mcg a day and work up to 10,000..all that did was give me worse headaches/migraines. My neurologist now told me that we all have a low B-12 count, so now I didn't know who to believe, but I went down to 5,000 a week & it does seem to help with my GERD as well. I feel the same way about having to be my own doctor, but when you think about it we do know the way we feel better than anyone else. I'll be praying for you & yours as you contiune to work things out...God bless.

Thank you! Yes, since taking a vitamin b-12 each day, Ive been feeling alot better. I dont know if its from the b-12, but I will most def bring this up to the GI sepcialist Im scheduled to see on the 15th of december.

Wow that is interesting I was just at the Vitamin Shoppe the other day and noticed they had small bottles of Vitamin B12 drops. It worth looking into and Ill goggle it. Right now I'm taking Calcium Vit D3 and Magnesium and Im thinking about trying to take the Coenzyme Q10 again. I also take a vitamin Multiple Bs' 100s do you think the drops work better? It seems like the Vitamin Shoppe sellsd alot of the B12 drops cause they often seen to run low on it. I have thought before of trying it.

My B-12 got really low - Dr. told me it was because of being on Dilantin for a long period of time.
In doing some research I've found that most people on anti-seizures medic. are low in B-12 due to the fact the way our foods are made now.

I took the shots for several years and how I'm taking B-12 complex liquid.
this is made my Sundown - it has NO artificial color or flavor, NO sugar, No milk, NO lactose, No soy, No gluten, No wheat, No yeast, No Fish and is sodium free.

You can purchase this at any grocery store or Drug store. I buy my at Kroger when it's on sale. Buy one get one free.

I take to 2 (1 mL) droppers a day, I hold it under my tongue for about 30 seconds before swallowing.

--I did have a lot of problems with GRED, I never connected the fact that it's better (almost gone) with the B-12. I thought my change in diet and excerize and losing 40 lbs was the reason my was better. So this inform. is very interesting.

I become frustrated when people will say "You do know that stress can cause seizures". If that were so, then our military would be having seizures, those in the stock market would be too, as well as the explorers of planet earth.

We do all have a seizure threshold, and there are any number of causes. Most times I would predict that it is like a tower of blocks, you can stack just so many before you crash.

Great to know that one of your blocks might be a deficiency in Vit B-12. It seems to have lowered you below your seizure threshold. Everyone has a seizure threshold level. I believe we have taken a few blocks off of my daughters stack as well, but it doesn't mean that it can't be built up again over time.

There is more to learn about our GI system and neurological issues, that is for sure.

I know something is up... last night I went to bed and had the fast heart beat again, and felt alitle off... like I was kind of light headed feeling... then right after falling sleep, my husband was woke up to me jerking my left side of my body. He saw my leg and arm jerking and tried to wake me up. I remember looking at him, asking why he was waking me up? But then went back to bed. I woke up this morning feeling tired and kind of sluggish with a headache. So, I gave another call to my neurologist's office and left a voice mail for the caseworker again. Im having the heart racing periods during the day, and when that happens, my left arm and hand start get tingly feeling. Like as if I slept on that side and it went to sleep on me. But Im not having any of the jerking during the day.

So I guess I will wait to hear back from them again. I just so badly wish all these problems would just go away!

Did you take any type of B-12?

I'm asking, one of the side effects with B-12 shots and the liquid is that my heart races. My GP and Neur. has never heard of this side effect.

I take a B-12 supplement because the Lamictal affects my blood cells. I haven't noticed any side effects one way or the other.

Ive been taking a vitamin b-12 for about a week now. My father in law brought it up to me last week and said to try taking a vitamin each day and see if things get better. So I went to the store to get some... he said to get the vitamins that has 2000 mcg on the bottle. So I picked those up and take one of those in the morning. I also take a Complex B vitamin, along with my Keppra XR in the morning.

The last time I quit taking the GERD medication, I went for two days and had the pain again. This time, with the reaction I was having from the medication, I quit the medication (my last dose being on thursday 11-24) and had started to take the vitamin b-12 on 11-22. So far, the pain that I had returned prior to getting off, isnt as bad as it was then. So I dont know if the B-12 has something to do with that, or what. Im just curious as to what the GI dr will say. In the meantime, if I do have any pain that I think is related to the GERD, Ive been taking tyenol, and my primary care dr even prescribed me Hydroco Liquid medication, to help with chest pain.
