For benefits, they are changing to direct deposit. So i had to give my bank account number and routing number. So with that, aren't they now able to manipulate(take out, put, check ) my acount as they please?

And it's not just for Disability benefits, also i notice in Jobs/companies they also do the direct deposit thing.

I dont understand. So now, are accounts can be seen, and manipulated by other people?

A direct debit is a special kind of repeated payment- usual for bills.

In the UK at least, once you set up one, it does give them the right to *change* the amount that is paid (though not without notifying you as well). There are strict controls for this, and it is really designed to pay bills which might change slightly each time- so they get paid without them constantly asking your permission- such as heating bills etc

If they were to attempt to take other money out of your account using your details, that would be against the law.

I take it this Direct Deposit is for the benefits office to regularly pay you? If you have given them your bank details, then the cr*P would really hit the fan if say, one of their employees tried to use the info. They can't go into a bank to get a statement of your account, without pretending to be you and signing. They can't use an ATM as they don't have your card or number. Governmental offices have to follow strict data protection laws regarding personal details like this. Your account should be safe :)

Without a certain level of trust (backed up by fraud laws) modern banking/business would be a nightmare!

One of my paychecks is direct deposit. I just keep a close eye on the transactions and I've never had any problems. They can't take my money out. They can only deposit. They also can't see whats going on IN my account that I know of.

Your bank account has always been seen or manipulated by other people. That what a bank is for! It may sound scary, but direct deposit is a common practice, and it's safe. It doesn't hurt to keep an eye on your statement in case there's an error, but the banks are not allowed to make unauthorized changes to your account. Period.

And it's also much safer than credit card accounts in terms of vulnerability to hacking.

My Disability Benefits go directly into my bank account on a certain day every month. It is easier to do that than to have a paper check sent to your home as you are assured to get it on the day it is due to come so you can get bills paid on time.

Nakamova has explained things simply. Also if you have any questions, talk to the people at the bank and let them know what you don't understand. Most banks are very good at working with their customers to help explain things.

I have my disability checks go in by direct deposit because it is also hard for me to get to the bank. The only thing is that you can't change when the check goes in (I don't think so). For example it might be set up to go in on the 17th of each month. If the 17th is on a weekend the money will go in on the Friday before that. I usually always call my bank to make sure the deposit was put in there.

If you get your check in the mail it may come early or late but you can put it in anytime you want.

I pay most of my bills over the internet. You can usually set up the day that you want the money to come out when you do that.

I've been doing things this way for years and have never had any problems.

Over here anyone who gets benefits from the government whether it be unemployment, disability, aged pension have their money directly deposited into their bank account.
The payments work out on a fortnightly basis & I think with the unemployment benefit & disability it goes on when you applied for benefits, eg when I was unemployed I got paid every 2nd Wednesday but I had a friend who is unemployed & gets paid every 2nd Friday. The aged pension is always every 2nd Thursday.

I don't know about other countries but over here in Australia it is quite common for your wage to be paid through internet banking or directly into your bank. I am currently working full time but have had a few casual/part time jobs over the years, out of those jobs there was only 1 job I got paid by cheque & the rest were directly into my bank.

Usually when people pay through your bank account they only know your basic details eg - your account name, your bank account number & your BSB number (BSB number is the number of your bank as each bank has a different number). No one can check your private bank information eg - how much money you have in your bank or take money out of your account.

I understand Niceguy's concern. For years my husband wouldn't let us do online banking. When he passed in 2008 I started, slowly and am now almost totally doing everything online. I check my account daily to make sure that nothing is amiss. We have to go with the flow!

My SSDI is set up for direct deposit.I bank online so I always make sure my check is in there before I pay my rent.

I got $700.00 put in my account once by social security who later wanted it back until I told them it had been used on rent, utilities and I couldn't afford to give it back.
