Hello, My name is Yessi. I am a 30 year old Female who was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2006 (when I was 24 years old and serving in the United States Navy). After my first seizure, my EEG showed seizure activity in my right temporal lobe, and I had many staring spells as well. I was put on Topamax and was on it for about 3 years. Once I got out of the Navy and moved back home, my new neurologist took me off of the topamax. Needless to say, in Jan. 2012 I had another seizure. This time, I had a lot of staring spells as well, and my doc put me on Depakote. I've been on depakote for about 6 months and I haven't had another seizure.

Hi yessi_209, welcome to CWE!

Congrats on getting seizure control with the Depakote! How does it make you feel otherwise?

Best,
Nakamova

thanks, the Depakote worked really quick for me. My big problem was that I was having many staring spells. I started with the seizure in January, got put on Depakote in February, and by mid May I was was seizure and staring spell free. The only thing, is it made me gain 10 pounds. But it really started helping me with my migraines as well. Now, I feel like i'm starting to get more frequent migraines, but the good thing is that I was able to lose those pounds :D

Im still trying to lose the weight I gained when I switched to Lamictal....

Do you keep a diary tracking your migraines? You may be able to identify some triggers that way.

Hello and welcome! Just curious as to why they took you off the topamax after 3 years? How did you find that worked for you?

Hello, and welcome! I was also diagnosed while I was in the Navy (I am actually still in, but not for much longer though). I have had t/c seizures, which I am taking topamax for, and I don't like it all that much. I think I would like to get off it after I get out of the Navy, although I really don't know what I would want to take, if anything... Anyway, I am glad the Depakote is working, and hopefully the migraines go away.

Your post struck me.... you said you are still trying to lose the weight you gained ONCE you switched to Lamictal? So... I never paid attention to the weight relation to my meds .... but when I saw this it struck that question... Lamictal causes weight gain?? Hmmm if so that would explain a few things to me.. lol
