Since I was very young I have frequently had this strange experience of a powerful craving for something I can not put my finger on. I have never been able to figure out what this thing is. Is there a name for this phenomenon? is this common? is it epilepsy related?

Can anyone tell me what this is?

Intense but indeterminate craving sensations are often related to low dopamine levels. Epilepsy is also associated with an impaired dopamine signaling system, so there could be a connection. Dopamine's role in epilepsy is complicated though, and not that well understood. For instance, dopamine has an anti-convulsant effect in some parts of the brain, and pro-convulsant effects in other parts of the brain, probably due to differing kinds of dopamine receptors.

that's VERY interesting. I was just talking to my wife the other day about how I can remember when I was VERY young how easily I could remember everything and how much i struggle now because nothing seems significant. And we talked about which chemicals in the brain are used for the experience of significance and Google turned up Dopamine.
Are there others? I wonder.
