my son has an interview tomorrow for a 3 month work experience. does he tell them he has E? or keep it under raps?

Tough call. I think it depends if his health issues are at all relevant to the job he's interviewing for. Are his seizures controlled? If not, is there a way that they could adversely affect his job performance? If he's hired, would his manager or someone in Human Resources need to know about his health situation?

thank u so much....he is working part time and a student so out there coping, but very recently had 2 big T/C at his weekend job, his therapist said go ahead and be honest but I know it will reduce his chances, his innocence does not warn him of this... I don’t want to freak him out, as he is prepared to be honest at end of interview.Albeit it brief…

I had an interview at a pharmacy yesterday and chose not to tell them. If I get offered the job then I will consider it. I've had a few interviews or job applications when I've told them about my epilepsy and then never heard back from them. It's hard not knowing if I genuinely was beaten to it by someone better or if it was epilepsy that kept me from getting the jobs. At least this time i'll know for sure.

Best of luck to your son, I hope he gets it!

I never tell them. I don't think other people feel forced to reveal all their medical issues in interviews so I don't either.

Also, my seizures are infrequent and have been relatively well controlled, so I usually am able to work for awhile at a job and have the people there know me before anything comes up.

When it does, since I have a track record there and personal relationships established, employers have always been willing to work with me and been very supportive, but again, I never have divulged that info voluntarily in an interview.

I wonder if this therapist giving advice to your son tells all her medical issues.. I doubt it.

I so appreciate your feedback Loopy Lou and Dignan (u r both so right!)...we shared his 'rights' (not to tell) with him last minute and there was no discussion at the interview on E..it’s in his portfolio and will be taking a look at that to see what’s in there, he deserves the right to have the equal chance - before judgment sets in....his interview went smashing!! so fingers crossed...

Good luck to him, I hope he gets the job!

I always hated trying to decide whether to tell someone about my epilepsy when I had an interview. It was always a toss up whether to be open & tell them or wait to see if I got the job then tell them.
Most of the time I ended up telling them especially when my partial seizures weren't under control.
I am looking for work at the moment & decided that since I am going well at the moment & my seizures are under control I don't need to mention my epilepsy next time I have an interview.

Chaz - That's great your sons interview went well, best of luck to him & hope he gets the job.

Im gonna keep this short and sweet, its my belief that you should never tell them if at all possible.Only can give them an excuse its never gonna help you.Sure their are people employed with epilepsy that told their employer, but i would be prepared to bet they are in the minority.

I agree with Neil129 - employers do not need to know at interview time - HOWEVER if your sons epilepsy made him unable to perform the duties that the job requires, it wouldn't be fair not to disclose it. Best of luck to him!

I definitely don't think he should tell them when he interviews. When he gets the job maybe he can consider it, but I've never told any of my employers I have Epilepsy. As long as it's not a job where he can get seriously hurt if he has a seizure on the job, then I don't think he needs to tell them.
...They might make him wear a helmet to work like Natalie Portman's character in "Garden State". lol j/k

This is how we learn, thank from my sincere heart...taken note of how it really is 'out there' and my son advised accordingly...but no doubt in his still innocent faith - only experience will teach him. But I for one have informed him of the good no great advice and his rights....

if you can believe it - he was due for a call on Monday and he is still waiting, grrrr. Have advised him to remove E from his CV, he has it under weaknesses...but his innocence still tells him to leave it in, but no doubt he will learn in his own time…at least this was just an internship..So as you all said, left with feeling, was it the E that held him back.....grrrrr….

I just found out today that I didn't get the job I had the interview for last week. Icant even blame the epilepsy because I never mentioned it. I just wasn't good enough. I think I got my hopes up too much and now I feel really low.

Back to square one yet again.

Just as a bit of advice to your son - its generally a bad idea to have a "weaknesses" section on a cv. Just keep all the positive stuff in there. I hope he gets the call soon, if not he should call them, it shows initiative.

I agree -- Knowing your weaknesses isn't bad for self-improvement goals, but it's not something you need to broadcast to prospective employers. And E is no more a weakness than freckles, or a fondness for mixing stripes and plaids.

Lou -- hang in there. As you know, the job market is horrid worldwide, and not getting hired isn't a reflection of your abilities and strengths.

you said it CWE friends....going to nudge him to remove the weakness - cos you are all correct....does not belong there!! and who would know better than you all..thank you... !

Woo Hoo! He got offered the internship....!!! Starting in Sept, hopefully his school will approve it. He also got approval for one additional year to complete his bachelors, 5 years instead of 4 with all grants. For today, the wind is in his sails, he so deserves this great news....praise the good Lord. Thank u all for your support and great advice. Thank U all!!!
