I am parent of a child who suffers from Epilepsy. I am absolutely sensitive to anything to do with Epilepsy. I am trying in my own small way to bring awareness amongst common people.

Most unfortunately, media that has the responsibility of playing a very positive and constructive role, has been witnessing quietly rude and cheap jokes being made in couple of Indian TV Shows being telecast globally including UK, USA etc.

Colours TV is producing a show 'COMEDY NIGHTS WITH KAPIL' which is ridiculing people suffering with Epilepsy by making jokes on epileptic seizures. In its Shows the Presenter (Mr. Kapil - a comedian) somehow brings in a reference to Epilepsy or Epileptics to make a joke - sometimes by mimicking a seizure on the Show, or by making cheap remarks.

The Show is shirking from its responsibility to bring common awareness among its viewer-ship and instead spreading myths e.g. TO CURE A PERSON UNDER SEIZURE MAKE HIM SMELL A SHOE'.

To approach the Show has been futile as neither they respond nor mend their ways. It seems the Colours TV proeuced comedy show 'COMEDY NIGHTS WITH KAPIL' has taken a crusade to ridicule the Epileptics globally.

This kind of attitude on the part of an International TV Channel (Colours) from India is ridiculous, cheap and hurting the sentiments of suffering people and their near and dear ones.

Through this forum I request that we should oppose belittling or ridiculing of people suffering from Epilepsy. No TV Channel airing such ABUSIVE programmes be allowed on a civilized land. Such shows give lot of pain. Please be on a WATCH for such abusive shows.

Hi swisspie, have you got any links to clips or articles about this? This post is the only bit of information on google that links Kapil Sharma with jokes about epilepsy (within the first 4 pages)- and I would very much like to see what he's been 'joking' about us :|

There are lots of clips of his shows, but since they're in Hindi (and the few random ones I've since watched don't seem to have any physical comedy about epilepsy) it's hard to know what's been going on.

The application of a strong smell such as onions/strong shoe smell! etc has been part of aromatherapy 'treatment' for Epilepsy in various eastern cultures.

I don't want to make a judgement without seeing evidence, but is it possible his comedy is a satire against Indians still holding on to out-dated, crazy ancient customs- and not directed at people with E?

Hi swisspie 1, welcome to CWE!

I think most CWE members would agree that portrayals of epilepsy in the media entertainment worlds that are offensive or misleading should be challenged where possible. I recommend steering people towards http://talkaboutit.org/ for an example of a celebrity using his fame to make a positive difference for those with epilepsy. Founded by actor Greg Grunberg (whose son has epilepsy), it provide basic myth-dispelling information for the layman in an easy-to-digest format.

The episodes of comedy show in which such serious jokes are taking place are in HINDI language. I shall revert to you with dates of shows and possibly YOU TUBE links. Am sure you agree that no civilised land will allow abusive behaviour even if it is in a FOREIGN LANGUAGE. Am also sure there are mechanisms which keep watch on foreign language channels so that law of the land is not breached. Thanks again. I shall revert soon. After which you may like to refer to the concerned authorities for investigation.

Am having problem to post a link as restricted by Administrator. Please copy the above and paste in You Tube search box. Click on First option that has above captioned subject and play. In the 22nd Feb episode of “Comedy Nights with Kapil”, one of the actors acts like he is having a seizure on seeing Actress and Kapil makes him smell a shoe to revive him. Pls see 27mins35 secs to 27mins50 secs in the attached link. This is a regular scene in his comedy shows. Why does he need Epilepsy or epileptic seizures to create jokes.

This is being shown on Indian Channel Colours TV being beamed in Europe and America also. [Though the show is in Hindi the law of the land does not allow abuse even in a foreign language. Please take action as appropriate.]

Terrible Jokes on Colours TV - Comedy Nights with Kapil

Friends,

Comedy Nights with Kapil on Colours TV from India being telecast in Europe and America including UK and USA is insulting Epilepsy Patients Globally.

To monitor the height of abusing the Epilepsy and people suffering is depicted in its Cheap Comedy Show Episode 23 telecast on September 7, 2013 [the practice goes on undeterred]. Example: Please visit Colours TVs official website and go to Comedy nights with Kapil, Full Episode -23, Sep 7th, 2013. Then please straight JUMP TO timing 18.30 to 19.30. This portion of the show abuses around 50 million epileptic patients globally and jokes on epileptic seizure for one full minute while the COMEDY is on and the whole audience laughs on epilepsy.

Photo sensitive people may observe caution for Graphics / and lights. The show I am not sure whether maintains sensitivity to epilepsy patients.

Please STOP this show from beaming into your country.

It'd be useful to know what action you have taken thus far and what you suggest can be done? You know more about the show, its broadcasters, producers and so forth so maybe you have email addresses? From what I've seen about the show, people have needed to hire lawyers to have certain material on the show removed and so far, nobody has had any success with these people.

Friend , Thanks for your reply. I am trying to approach channel thru various manners including posting comments on their blog. But all said and done the Show is not ready to mend its ways and instead increased its frequency to use abusive jokes on Epilepsy. If I say the Show has failed in its social responsibility it wd not be incorrect. My efforts will continue today tomorrow and thereafter. Epilepsy Patients are dear to my heart and I will use every opportunity to curb any negative publicity or jokes on Epilepsy. Sam
 
Why not give us the blog address and everyone who'd like to can begin to put pressure on them? Any other info would also be good.
 
Friend I strongly feel people who suffer from epilepsy are already suffering and such abusive shows must either shed abusive part on epilepsy or the show br forced stpped from being telecast. Even one country is a success. I am sure it is being beamef to countries in two digits if not in three digits. In Western countries such offenses are taken seriously.
 
Very right thing to do. The Anchor is smarter than u and I. He has a team of Moderators who first decide then allow any post on its blog. I was successful initially. They do accept my comments but not post them now. I do not find my earlier posts on their blog. Hope you understand who we are dealing with. pl contact your Government or Social Service they will guide course of action.
 
No Friend. Pl no funny thing on Epilepsy. Please read the further posts. pl also see Sept 7 show. details blow where the Anchor comedy mocks a Seizure. I hate this and heart cries.

Friends, There is a Watchdog body called BCCC which is headed by Mr. Ashish Sinha, Secretary General Email [ bccc@ibfindia.com ] may be contacted for protest letters. The BCCC's main task is to receive complaints of this nature and to take corrective measures. We are successfully trying to bring awareness.

Please publicise this injustice so that we may stop all wrongdoings against a vulnerably section of the society. We may take up this issue with the above body in good numbers. Thanks for your cooperation. Sam
