Hello, I've read that keppra can contribute to constipation in some people. I've taken keppra for 7 years now and this has not really been a problem for me long term. The last few weeks/month, I've felt like I have been swollen and constipated and i wondered if anyone had info on keppra and if this can start to occur after long term use?

I saw this other thread http://www.coping-with-epilepsy.com...-experienced-constipation-while-keppra-24510/

But, it was older and I wanted to check out new opinions. I am not in pain or anything, just annoyed more than anything. I've been drinking more prune juice (yuck!) but, I havent noticed it making much difference.

Any thoughts?

Hi!
I'm not sure I can be much help - I've had problems with constipation for a long time, I think a result of medication side effects and past problems with anorexia.
I started Keppra last spring and haven't noticed it being worse though.

If you haven't changed your dose in the last few weeks/months it seems less likely it would be the Keppra? But obviously I have not been taking it long enough to be sure.

I know how frustrating it can be, and I totally agree with you on the prune juice (yuck!!)
I'm sorry I don't have better suggestions and I hope it's just a temporary thing!

A friend of mine recommends Trader Joe's prune juice -- she says they should call it "plum nectar" instead, it really tastes different from 'normal' prune juice.

But if you're not into prune juice, there are plenty of other foods that can help, like apples, oatmeal or nuts.

Keppra does have an effect on the bowel as far as my daughter is concerned but more with urgency than constipation - she's been taking it for 9 months and never had this problem before. Sounds like you're more bloated than constipated, if it's wind then charcoal may help but you can't take it at the same time as your meds because it may absorb them too. My daughter takes activate charcoal capsules as it has helped with her urgency, she takes it around four hours after her meds and it settles her stomach.
