I was put on phenytoin when I was diagnosed then I got on levetiraceram (Keppra) at which point I had a mental breakdown that still reverberates in my life even after being taken off of of it a few weeks after getting on it- and now it's a year and a half later.
some people swear by it
there's no way I'm taking it again
I stayed on phenytoin and it hasn't been a 100% success rate of seizure cessation but at least it's not like I was before
I have no idea.
That stuff made me flat out out of my mind. It still hurts to think about it.
I advise extreme caution from personal experience.
There are many epilepsy meds out there.

I've suffered negative mood effects from keppra when initially going on the drug, and when I have increased the dosage. It has never lasted long, but was severe when it happened. On the flip side, once I got past this keppra has actually improved my mood and given me more energy.

I would say that anyone going on this drug should keep a very careful eye on their own behaviour and feelings, and have someone else do the same. If there are any negative mood effects, report to the doctor immediately. If the initial symptoms I had experienced had continued, I wouldn't still be taking this drug regardless of the improved seizure control.

As with any drug, the effects have to be weighed against the benefits, but regardless worth talking to the doctor about.

We are in the middle of a med change at the moment, as Keppra stopped t-c's for my daughter but not the myoclonics & absences started up very frequently. She's still taking her normal dose of Keppra for now, along with added Depakota at night, to start the weening process off of Keppra. She's been moodier than normal & at times gets very hyperactive. So we're hoping these are still the side effects of Keppra & not Depakote. Please Lord please let it be the Keppra & hopefully it'll go away.

Keppra, Keppra, Keppra- flush them down the toilet!!! I was on it for awhile-not good. I'm on topamax now & my seizures are controlled. There was talk of me coming of my meds but I've been on something for so long I didn't want to just yet

all I can say is thank you all for your comments , we have been discussing Keppra with our specialist nurse and they are considering putting my daughter on this , we had no info other than the manufacturers , but now that I have heard all of you tonight I will certainly require further discussions and a possible rejection

I seem the be the only person in the world who takes keppra, has no seizures and no side effects!!

@ Ker-stee, you are lucky, its good to be in that position, i found it good till i started to lose my mind on it, still losing my mind coming off it but hope it all settles soon. a friend of mine is on it too with no side effects, she loves it, a positive with it it is that she has become a take no bullshit kind of girl which for her is a good thing.
