My dr's nurse called me today and said the dr would like to try me on Lamictal. When I got off the phone with the nurse, I then phoned my mom and she said to make sure it didnt have sulfa in it. She looked it up, (I was out doing errons with my husband) and she calls me back saying if I was allergic to the sulfa, then I would be having an allergic reaction to the Lamictal too.

Back last year, I think it was around Sept 2010, I went into the drs because I had what looked like a bug bite on my upper eye lid of my left eye. The dr gave me some sulfa medication to help treat it, and hours after taking the first pill, my left side of my face started to swell up! It looked horriable! So I was taken off the sulfa medication and given something else to treat it.

I called back the nurse, left her a voicemail to let her know I was allergic to Sulfa and I have yet to hear back from her. I got home, and there was a message from our pharmacy, which stated my prescription had been delayed and they will call when it is ready. So she must have already called me in the Lamictal. I wont be picking it up til I hear back from her.

Has anyone else taken this medication before and had bad side effects?
It didnt occour to me to ask her about the sulfa medication and me being allergic to it with taking lamictal.

You should check with the pharmacy to be sure, but the only listed issue with Lamictal and sulfa is that it can make sulfa drugs less effective. Lamictal is not itself a sulfa drug or in the sulfa family.

Thanks!

I called my pharmacy and they said the two shouldnt be a problem together. So, I guess Im ok. I am going to wait to hear back from the nurse since I left her a voicemail.

i toke lamictal for couple of years, unfortanatly for me it din't work at all.The only side effect im sure i had was headechs every afternoon daily and maybe some minor memory problems but im not sure.

it works differently for everyone so you might not experience the headech issue.

I've found the same reference about lamictal inhibiting sulfa drugs, nothing on it being a sulfa drug itself.

Please call your pharmacist with this question. They are a vast storehouse of knowlege and usually like being asked questions. If anybody knows, they would.

I'm highly allergic to sulfa drugs. My face swells up like a puffer fish and I can't breathe. I'm okay on Lamictal. Also okay on Diamox, which is related to sulfa drugs.
