My daughter (age 14) is ramping up her lamictal XR dose and just increased to 150mg yesterday morning. By the afternoon she mentioned that she had some "shivers" during the day. I am wondering if this may be a tremor side effect. It happened about 5 times and basically her arms raise up as if she has the shivers. If these are a potential side effect, do they go away once her body adjusts to the new level? She had no shivers from 25-100 mg which was about a 6 week ramping up time frame. If they do not subside, are there any vitamins, tips, tricks or ideas to help them subside? She said they are not bad, just weird.

Thanks,
Beth

Hi, chop.
I'm on Lamictal 400mg/day but I've never experienced the shiver thing before. I don't think I've heard others here talk about it, either. Sorry that wasn't so helpful! Someone else here hopefully has heard of this before.

Hi --

I didn't get the shivers you describe. It may well be a temporary side effect. The best thing to do is watch and wait -- if it persists or gets worse, let the neuro know. Magnesium has been used to reduce shivering, so you could consider giving her a magnesium supplement to see if that helps.

We asked the Neurologist today if these "shivers" are typical. Paige mentioned that both days she had the shakes, she was laughing ALOT. The neurologist said it could have been from hyperventilating. Never thought of that. The things that make you say hmmm.....

Interesting. I've felt very cold and been shaking with my teeth chattering but this was in between a cluster of complex partials. I hope the magnesium helps :)
