I started taking Lamotrigine right after my last seizures a year and a half ago.
At first I had lots of dizzy spells and still had auras, but I've been feeling better and better, as my neurologist said I would. The longer you take it the better it works. I haven't had any real trouble for quite a while now. Then suddenly I take a nap after work yesterday and have this really disturbing dream. After I woke up my head was screwed and I felt disorientated the rest of the day. I still feel funny today. Is it possible that I had a seizure in my sleep, despite the meds?

I think that's a question for your doc. I've been on Lamictal for 12 yrs and have been mostly sz free (2 when changed to generic lamotrigine, and a breakthrough last month). I've can't say if anything like what you had is the drugs - I know what you're talking about (a bit "off" after taking a nap), but I've never associated it with the drugs or my e.

I've been taking Lamictal XR for the past 8 years, and it's been working like a charm. There have been some nights where I have night terrors and I wake up feeling hungover even though I haven't drank anything.

I have always thought the same thing actually. This is just personal opinion, but I wouldn't think a full on grand-mal. Maybe a mix of myclonic jerks and a partial of some sort as you do have some form of altered consciousness sometimes?

I do have like simple partials with altered consciousness on some days when awake, so I thought maybe it was a complex. Has happened before too

Hi Mflint, I myself have taken 300mgs. of lamotrigine/lamictal,(2 in the am, 1 for pm),everyday for 18 years. I can testify that sleep was limited. Sometimes I'd wake up after a bad dream and not be able to go back to sleep. Sometimes I'd stay up all night. No bad thoughts. It is a common side effect of the drug. I was grateful my doctor found something that worked as I had tonic clonic seizures, and muscle jerks every night. However it only worked partially and I had insomnia problems.
I found a second med. that allows me undisturbed sleep and no seizures, marijuana. If I use it minimally,(2-3 tokes),at night I sleep like a baby and wake up giddy. But that's me.

Thanks Joyous. I'm happy to say that I don't usually have any trouble sleeping, even with the Lamotrigine, only once in a while. And the episodes I described have only happened when I took a nap for an hour or so after work, not during the night. Maybe it's because I usually take a couple of tokes myself before going to bed at night, but never have before a nap...
