:e:Hi everyone. new to forums.Looking for some possible answers regarding dilantin and keppra. Have been on this combination for 4 years now and recently have been noticing a lot of numbness in my toes. And blood tests show tyriod levels to be slightly low. Have done some research and found no articles that say these could be side effects. Hoping one of my associates out ther might be able to help. Thanks

I do not mean to be negitave but there are some side effects that are not listed, that is my experince, keppra and I never got on, it seems to be doing good with you, you might think about asking the doctor

While it's

true that thyroid levels could be slightly low due to your meds, they could be slightly low due to a number of things as well....it's not an uncommon thing.

I've been on both meds mentioned....Dilantin for 35 years...and I lasted all of 9 days on Keppra. Horrible side effects for me. (Moving like an Energizer Bunny, no sleep, seeing things like they were always in a kaleidoscope....you get the idea) AND I had low thyroid levels at the same time. But I'd had low thyroid levels BEFORE I went on Keppra, and after I'd been on Dilantin.......and my father had it as well.

Discuss the low thyroid levels with your doc. If they need to be adjusted by meds, then use the lowest possible amount to do so. Some people can simply get away with adjusting their diet somewhat. There are options out there....

Hi LLBORN,

Peripheral neuropathy (loss of sensation/nerve damage in the toes) can be one of the long-term side effects of Dilantin. Definitely ask your neuro about it.

Thanks. I didn't notice it much until the doc increased my dilantin and keppra. But I have been on it for+ years. I will ask him soon.

I've been ok keppra but not dilantin and I've never had anything like that happen.

Do you have diabetes or been checked out for it? Alot of times numbness in the feet is a effect of it.

Had recent fasting blood tests and glucose is not high. I do see nuerologist this week. thanks for more info to ask him. list of questions getting long. Thanks

ou were very right on the mark. I do have nueropthy in both feet. My doctor would like to take me off the dilantin and try just keppre increasing it alot. I'm scared of having a seizure when he starts ot lower my dilantin. 3 weeks before it starts so I build up keppra levels. He saw my concern in my eyes as soon as he said it. But said we would monitor closely. My 3 daughters have also shown concern. Yhey have seen my seizures and the length of time they are. But research seems to show it is the way to stop the nueropthay. Any input would be great. Thanks
