Hi this is my first time here and i am looking for some feedback and support. i have an 18 yr old daughter who has been on keppra for 3 yrs after suffering from 2 seizures 28 days apart. both times were before her period. both times she was suffering from what we thought were allergy symptoms. so she took benedryl within hrs she seized. every month prior to her period she would still get this "aura". she knows her body so well b/c she has been a diabetic since age 4. so i contacted my gynocologist as well as a new ped. neurologist. they agreed there are hormonally triggered seizures. so she continues to be on keppra, though thankfully she hasent seized since. Now, she is away in her first year of college, she is pre-med and thinking pediatric neurology . Right now she is suffering from severe allergies. is there a safe oral allergy medication she can take? any info would be great!

I hope your daughter no longer suffers seizures, especially being such a young lady.
Ive often thought about the possibility of hormonal and/or allergy triggered seizures or seizure times.
It would be interesting to find what other doctors (i.e. non-neurologists) make of this.
I think your daughter considering studying paediatric neurology is amazing! Good luck to her if she goes for it-what a fantastic way to challenge what you know yourself.

Hi mommyx5, welcome to CWE!

Your daughter's best bet would be to ask her neurologist and the pharmacist. Some of the allergy medications can reduce seizure threshold (particularly ones that contain diphenhydramine), but not everyone reacts the same way. Claritin an Allegra are considered relatively safe, but it's a good idea for her to try very small doses of any given med, and avoid prolonged repeated dosing until she gets a sense of how she is affected.

Hi Mommyx5,

I dont have allergies but, I can definitely relate to having seizures right before I have my period! Its always been a problem for me.

I've taken birth control pills and the doctors have told me to skip the last week of the month and then start taking the next month so that I never "cycle" but because of insurance reasons I can never get it filled when I need it.."its too soon" the insurance says, so that never worked out. But, Im having this procedure done where they are going to burn the lining of my uterus so that I will never have a period again. I cannot wait!!!! :)

I have 3 boys and my tubes are tied so really there's no need for me to have one anyways. But, Im hoping this will help reduce my having seizures, sure would be great!!! Good luck to your daughter!!
