I think that making a contest out of losing weight gives people incentive to do that too quickly in an unhealthy manner
Fast weight loss is unhealthy for a number of reasons:

The pounds that you shed are mainly water weight and not from fat, which can cause you to easily dehydrate and then rapidly regain the weight.
Fasting or using detox diets can cause diarrhea; the resulting dehydration can cause constipation.
Rapid weight loss leads straight to fatigue, draining your energy levels and stamina.
Restricting your calories means risking malnutrition, or not receiving the right amount of vitamins and minerals.
Your sodium and potassium levels will drop, contributing to a greater chance of cramping and a feeling of illness.
Losing weight quickly takes it toll on your appearance, causing your skin to dry out, your hair to lack luster and your complexion to appear gaunt.

Also remember that Dr. Oz is a known to usually be a quack in scientific circles
Here on SBM we have frequently had cause to criticize the media for poor science reporting and for spreading misinformation. Among many other individual offenders, we have criticized Dr. Oz for promoting alternative medicine on his TV show and gullibly promoting guests who pretend to talk to the dead and pretend to heal people with carnival sideshow tricks.

Dr OZ is doing this challenge along with Weight Watchers - which has a well known track record. I do believe people are smart enough to make the right choices when signing on for this type of support. No one forces them to do anything. Yet doing a challenge can be fun when others are supporting you.

Keeping too much weight on, is also unhealthy.
For every extra pound of excess weight on your body, you add 3 times that amount of pressure on your knees.

Go for it... Trust your gut... Have fun!
