Hi all,

Just found out on Friday afternoon that my position has been eliminated as of June 30th. So after 18 years I will be unemployed. Not really sure what to do now. After spending the weekend curled into the fetal position, I am doing better. I have some questions that I was hoping that you all might be able to help with. As far as disability goes, I function fine, but I am concerned about being able to hold a job through the probationary period of 90 days. If I have to miss due to seizures, then I will loose that job. Should I look into disability?

This whole thing sucks!:crying:

I'm so sorry, losing a job is devastating. I'm glad you're allowing yourself to grieve and I hope you feel better soon. I wish there were words to make it better, but sadly it's just time.. And hopefully some amazingly understanding people in your life!

I don't know the American system, so did a little search and I found this conversation. Sounds like if you identify they might be afraid of legal action for firing you due to an occasional absence. Might make you feel better/reduce your stress if you know they are on board and aware it's a possibility but one that is unlikely. Your long history and work ethic at your previous job will hopefully speak for itself!

I'm am sorry your loosing your job. As I'm sure your aware I've been unemployed since the March 1st. I am living on unemployement I was working from home and making a good salary but the stress of the job was causing many seizures a day. I have a phone interview in 15 minutes for the same type of position and I worry about the same think. i have filed for disability but I hear its a long drawn out process because they will decline my application then I will have to appeal then you have to go before a judge who finally makes the determination. I can't go 18 months without a job so I figure the more jobs I get fired from durring this process the better my chances of getting the disability.

Good luck and don't let it bring you down like it did me!

This sucks world recession I guess, but really if you disclose your ep at job acceptance then they cannot fire you due too ep, American system pretty parralel too here stumbled across it a few times, big :hugs: huskymom thinking of you

Huskymom,
Sorry to hear about you losing your job, I hope you will be able to find more work soon.

I don't know much at all about the disability pension in the USA but over here in Australia it is almost impossible to get the disability pension if you just have epilepsy.

Huskymom, so sorry about losing your job. :hugs: It's a tough call whether to go after disability, reports from other folks reports it can sometimes take multiple attempts before you get it.
For the time being, give yourself some time to process everything, maybe explore what jobs are out there -- maybe some employers will be more understanding of your health issues.

I'm so sorry Huskymom, you are awesome and don't deserve any of this crap. You've helped me out and so many other people on here. I haven't been able to hold a job since 2010, I know the feeling of just wanting to get through the basics so if you do have a breakthrough you'll don't have to worry about getting let go. Either way I really hope your alright and things work out. I just got SSI so if you have any questions about that PM me, best wishes my friend.

So sorry about losing your job. I just interviewed a lady today who without E has lost a job 6 times in the past 10 years because of the economy - just kept getting laid off. She just said in a desparing sort of way - I just want steady employment. She also gave me each one of her previous employers to prove that they had actually laid her off because of down sizing. Its all very discouraging. Hang in there Huskymom!

Thanks everybody. I will be sure to keep you all up to date on what is happening. Dr. appt. this morning with my GP, so I don't anticipate anything much with that. Saw my epi last month and she increased my meds AGAIN! Fingers crossed that this time we see some real results :)
