I first found the site in my Nutritional Healing book. I've worked at GNC for 8 years and am constantly reading about different health issues to help people. I was diagnosed 1 year ago; after my 1st tonic-clonic. I have been on carbamezapine ever since. I hate being on the meds but I stay on them for husband and kids. My husband was there when I had my 1st one and has a very hard time talking about it. When I woke up I didn't know anything. Who I was, That I had Kids, who he was, where I was. It took about 30 min. for me to get that back. I still have a very bad short term memory. I take essential oils, calcium, alpha lipoic acid, and l-arginine for blood flow. I wanted to say that I love the site. I read other peoples stories and my heart goes out to them. my first tonic-clonic is described below.

Hello W&M - Welcome to CWE
I moved you to your own thread so that everyone could come by and welcome you.

You speak of your memory loss. My daughter had this for three months. She didn't know her family, or much about her life, other than how to do the things she knew how to do. Very very odd

She still has memory loss, but her's tends to be what leads up to the seizure. Mostly hours before. She never has lost any afterwards, other than the one experience. I am wondering if one of the meds that she was on, caused that one.

What nutritional book did you read about CWE in?

Hi, hello

and how do you do? It is very nice to meet you!

CWE is a really cool place, and I am soooooo very happy that you're here. I, too, am curious as to what book you found it in........DO TELL!!!!

Mr B, our host, has built us an AWESOME home here......there's lots of nooks and crannies to check out, so feel free.

Eric will probably be by with the coffee soon......usually Buckeye does that, but he's off doing his ACCOUNTANT gig thing right now, so we'll leave it up to Eric. He does a great job of filling in for Buckeye, and his coffee is just as yummy.

Feel free to ask any questions.........we'll do our best to answer them. If we don't know the answer, we'll try to direct you to the right place....and believe it or not, there ARE a few actual doctors on this forum.

Take care,

Meetz

Welcome Wife & Mom

Here's your coffee so you can get comfy while looking around the site. There's tons of great info here If You're more interested in more natural treatments then check out Zoe's Corner http://www.coping-with-epilepsy.com/forums/f39/. They've got a lot of great info there. Also (in case you haven't already found it) check out the list of natural remedies http://www.coping-with-epilepsy.com/index.php?p=alternative-treatments

I also use supplements for my seizures but I use Co-enzyme Q10 for circulation. Do be careful with the L-Arginine though. From my understanding all amino acids work in synergy so taking too much of one might cause an imbalance. I know Arginine works with Lysine so that's what would be needed to keep the balance, though I'm not sure how much. Too much Arginine also makes someone more susceptible to cold sores.

As for forgetting things after a seizure. That's pretty common. For me the stronger the seizure the more I forget & the longer it takes to remember. I have to admit it is comforting to know others forget too though.

Hi W&M :hello: Welcome to CWE! Make yourself at home. There's plenty of information here in the forums, so have a look around. I also encourage you to check out Zoe's Corner for some interesting discussions on the role of nutrition in epilepsy :) My son has significant memory loss surrounding one of his seizures, but I believe that was from the meds they gave him at the hospital. Now he is med free and his memory is excellent other than the gap in time from that one event.

Hi W&M, welcome to the forum. :hello:

I first found the site in my Nutritional Healing book.

Huh? Is CWE referenced in a book? I'd sure like to know more details on that.

... I still have a very bad short term memory. ...

One year later? Are you sure you aren't experiencing partial (simple or complex) or absence seizures? I would have thought your memory would have returned to normal by now - unless the cognitive deficits are a side effect of your AED. I'd recommend looking into neurofeedback and see if it might help improve your short term memory. :twocents:

I still have a very bad short term memory. I take essential oils, calcium, alpha lipoic acid, and l-arginine for blood flow.

I just reread this and wanted to say that that I have read that ALA is a very strong chelator. What it is able to do is to move metals around. I am not sure if it is the only chelator that can cross the blood brain barrier, but one that does it the most effectively.

You don't mention how much you are using, but it could most likely be moving the metals around and depositing them in other organs, which could be making you worse. It has a very short half life, and needs to be taken every three hours, in low doses. At least that is what the professional chemist recommended to me, that has been studying it for some time.

You might look up Andrew Cutler, if you want more information about ALA and chelation.

The book is "Prescription For Nutritional Healing" I beleive its the thrid edition. Its by james and phyllis balch. It has everything from herbs to conditions to juice fasting to enemas. I read it almost everyday at work.

tonic-clonic

Last January (08) I was at work. It was about 530pm. I was there with my husband and I hadn't eaten anyting yet. We had gone to lunch but the waitress was rude so I had water while he ate. We had gone back to my store and sat there a while talking. My husband said I sat down on his lap and in the middle of a sentence had started staring off into space, blank look and not moving. I had done that before so he just waited for it to end like it had in the past. After about 3 minutes, he said I stood up and laid down on the floor like I was going to take a nap. As soon as I was flat on the floor, I went into a full blown seizure. It lasted about 5 minutes. Then I got up and was walking around but wouldn't respond to him or my employee. The ambulance got there and kept telling my to sit down and I would say "Ok" but wouldn't do it. I remember none of this. None at all. I remember from the time the peramedic grabbed me and sat me down. I felt like someone slapped me in the face, hard. He started asking me questions like my name, pointed at people and who they were, my dob, my kids. I knew none of that. He kept asking me and it pissed me off. I kept saying I dont know and he wouldn't leave me alone. He tried to take me to the hospital and told him I wasn't going anywhere with him cause he was a jerk. My boyfriend (now husband) talked me into going. I didn't know who he was, but knew I could trust him. About 10 minutes later I remembered who I was as apologized to the peramedic for being rude. So i had one type of seizure that progressed into another. It was like I knew it was coming because I laid myself down but i was not aware of anything.

Hi,

I am newto site -just started to talk about my epilepsy (after 10 years). I totally understand where your coming from. I have chlonic tonic seizures and have no memory afterwards. Me and my mum still get teary eyed when talking about when I had a seizure ten years ago and woke up and asked if my mum was my mum. It is such a strange feeling not nice at all.

The confusion which is so eviden after a seizure,is also so hard for family and friends to accept, as they can never understand that strange feeling.

I also have bad short term memory - although my Dr will not accept that this is an epilepsy related thing. I am glad its not just me who suffers?

Its funny, just before a fit - I think that split second before you know.I have been told that I scream just before a seizure and have ran to my mum, but I have no recollection of ever doing this. I just remember waking up and not knowing who the prime minister is, or what day comes after wednesday - I get so mad with myself for not knowing these simple facts.

I feel so much better that others feel like this too - its a relief to talk about it.

Does everyone feel like they have been run over by a bus afterwards? I find that I cannot get myself in and out of bed or even on and off the toilet on my own and need my mum or fiance to assist- very embarracing.

Excellent Book!!! I have the older edition.
