Anyone ever use Lumosity? I have memory issues and mild dyslexia. Just wondering if it helps... Thanks!

great idea (and 2ndchances knows this answer WELL)... very suggested for epilepsy.
i had brain surgery in august and a few members suggested it to me, and mel had her 2nd surg in april and plays it daily. it literally helps rebuild our memory and attention span...... def try it out reece, you'll like it :)

I signed up for the free version. Everyday you can play 3 games free and determine if they help you. I do like some of the games and some help me with my concentration. The biggest problem I have is that most are timed. So, while my brain may have figured out the correct answer, coordinating that with the correct finger to use to press the appropriate key is a major issue.

That being said, I think you should give the free version a try and see if it helps you.

OK. Installed the app and going to give it a try. Thank you for the advice!

I've been using the free version for almost a year. It is fun to do, and I have seen some good changes. Would I pay for it, not at this time. I feel the free version covers my needs for now.

I even talked to my neuropsychologist about it when I was in for my VEEG. He said
if I see benefits from it go for. But he wants to see more scientific studies for the program.
He wants to see other reports besides the biased reviews.

I LOVE IT!

Ok, so a co-worker suggested it to me shortly after I returned to work following my second brain surgery. When I did the original test, I found it very interesting that focus, memory and spatial recognition were my weakest... all things I'd discussed with my surgeon at my 6 week post-op follow-up. I did the free version for a few days, and felt that I could really benefit from it, so I paid for the one year. I marked it in my calendar for a few weeks before the year is up to cancel the auto-renewal, if the novelty wore off, and I wasn't using it.

Interestingly, I've seen a marked improvement in everything!!

And, shhhhh, don't tell my husband I'm telling you this. He's a math whiz, and also very competitive. (He's been using the free version, which has several games locked out). He called me one day after playing, super proud of getting a new high score in a math game, and asked me what my score was. He assumed it was an easy win... but I smoked him! I sent him a screenshot for proof, and he's stopped his trash talking a little since ;)

I'll be seeing my surgeon again for probably the last time on the 17th, and I can't wait to talk to him about Lumosity, and see if he know about it, what his thoughts are, etc.

I paid for it for 2 years & it didn't help me at all. I gave up when I started continually getting worse at most of the exercises.

I've only tried it once since my surgery and I didn't see any improvement.
I agree with this Doc, I want more scientific evidence that it really works.
I suppose, tho, if it is like any other type of games, video or otherwise, once you keep doing it again and again, it will improve one's cognitive/spatial skills and memory.

There hasn't been any research that says an improvement in an online game or exercise in Luminosity transfers to a needed cognition or skill in real life. Like the ability to react more quickly and stop the car faster before you ram into somebody. Or that you can recognize someone you've met 5-10 times (facial recognition). Or that you can sort through all the things you have to do that day and pick the right things you should do first (planning). Until they have that proof of real-world benefit I'm not as interested. But don't let that stop you. Seriously. Everyone should do whatever they feel is helping them. I believe everyone is an individual and gets the most from taking charge of their own care, and doing what seems to work for them.

Question: When Luminosity first came out a couple of the games had rotating graphics, or flashing lights. Have those been removed? If not they can be a seizure trigger for those who are photosensitive.

Speed recognition game is there. If you are referring to the yes/no matching game.
IE: Does this [] Match this [] or does this <> match this {} , etc..

If it's the game I'm thinking of, it shouldn't trigger seizures. But I'm not photosensitive.

No... that's not the game. There was a vibrating flashing wheel kind of thing - but your post answers the question. It sounds like it's not there. Or maybe it was on one of their competitors' sites?

Thought maybe I should another :two cents: and clarification to my above post.

Life after 2 brain surgeries feels like a constant game of 'connect the dots'. As I continue to recover, I'm finding new strategies to compensate for, and work with my new :brain: and some of its limitations.

To me, it's fun; simple as that. I don't take them too seriously, and also don't have the expectation that it will make me a brain surgeon or rocket scientist either. However, I do feel empowered by the challenge of proving to myself that my brain can still do things, despite missing a good chunk. Also, the brain fascinates me. My husband plays some games with ease, in which I struggle. Likewise, even though he doesn't have epilepsy, has never taken AEDs or other prescription pills and has his full brain, I excel at others. :woot:

Yes to more studies will be interesting to read, for sure... especially if you're absolutely looking for proof, or guaranteed results of some kind. But honestly, my days are too precious to take this so seriously. Anyway.... I'm off my :soap:

Cheers.

I have always thought that the scientific community was pretty certain that the brain is like a muscle and, when exercised, it improves. I do have doubts when it comes to us, though, because our brains are not normal and the damage we have is very different than that of, say, a healthy 70 year old. I've known quite a few people past the age of 70 who kept up their mental functioning and have the most amazing minds despite their age. Since I began writing full time, I can see that my ability to bring back the vocabulary I once had has improved but, at the same time, I am also aware that I am disabled in that regard. I have been doing the Cambridge university cognitive function tests because they give you your percentile score according to thousands of others who have done them. I am in the lower 6 percentile, so improvements from exercising my concentration might give me results but those results are not likely to take me from the lower 6% to the upper 90%. But the Cambridge tests at least let me keep an eye on whether I am getting better or worse, which gives me a better sense of control. They also isolate mental functioning into categories, which is very thorough and enlightening. They test planning ability, cognitive function, academic function and a bunch of other things.

Well I have used it a few times now. I am not doing that great overall. Seems like it's going too fast and I get all frustrated trying to keep up and end up making mistakes. I will definitely keep at it though.

Thanks for the input and advice!
