Kinda new to all this. Over a year ago I blacked out at the wheel, had an accident. The doctor called it a seizure, couldn't get behind the wheel for 6 months. I take 400mg Dilantin/day. Also take blood pressure meds. I will still sometime kinda grind my teeth and be somewhat out of it (according to my wife). And this doesn't last long at all (4-5 minutes at best). Anyone with this experience, any helpful information. I don't like going to doctors-

Thanks!

Hi, Welcome to CWE;
There are lots of great people here to get input from.
Have you had more than one seizure, or did you have epilepsy when younger?
Have you been to see a neurologist or epileptologist for an evaluation? If so, what have your EEG and MRI results shown? What type(s) of seizures were you diagnosed with?
Have you been seizure-free on the dilantin?

Hi Mac, welcome to CWE!

Have you talked to your neurologist about the teeth-grinding and being out-of-it episodes? Those sound like complex partial seizures, and your doc might want you to add a med or adjust your dose to try and get those under control.

There's some good basic info on some steps you can take at this link:

Thank you for responding. I'm not satisfied with my neurologist, stopped seeing him some time back. And all this doesn't actually bother me as far as being scared, etc. Just curious if other people have the same issue at times.

New here and not sure which buttons to hit and so forth!! I've never had , I guess, the grand mal. And yes, even when taking dilantin, I still get the teeth grinding, and somewhat spaced out for a few minutes or so. But they don't last long, any of it. And when that's happening, it seems as though my memory is not as well as it was for a few. and thanks!

Nine years ago I was noted by my dentist to be a night-time jaw-clencher. I didn't have TMJ per se, but often would wake up with a sore jaw even with the mouth guard. No evidence of teeth grinding, though. At that point I did not have seizures that I knew of. He made me a mouth guard to protect me teeth, and that was that.
Then four years ago I started having seizures, primarily at night. As seizures improved, the jaw clenching lessened and in the past year my dentist has noticed evidence of this as well.
So was I having unrecognized seizures 5 years before recognizable seizures started? Lots of people are teeth grinders or jaw clenchers, and maybe the seizure medication simply made my jaw relax more at night. Not sure I'll ever know for sure.

I don't actually grind, it's more chatter my teeth. And not all the time or every night. Just sometimes. I sometimes think my seizure meds and high blood pressure meds get all screwed up together and causes some of this.
