The Mad Diet is driving me Mad! I need a book about it. I think I am leaning a little Paleo diet, as I am carb terrified even of good carb's. What beverages are alright? Sick of water all day! Cheese is o.k. right? Do I avoid all fruit? I limit myself to 5 carbs of any kind is that about right and required forever? Anyone else using strictly Paleo or MAD (modified Atkin's?)

Help I am really missing caffeine, Chocolate and carbs even the good ones. I think Soy milk was invented to destroy my taste buds!

Right now I eat meat, tons of eggs a little cheese and very little veggies (carbs) take vitamins and calcium with magnesium.

This a boring diet but I am losing weight and seizure are less not always less severe, less frequent severe though. Is there at least a recipe book the fits with Paleo or MAD? I have also noticed its hard to watch my family eat everything I can't and feel so limited with this diet.

Hi, John.

I'm not on the MAD diet, but I always try to eat healthy. I make my own beverages.

I make my own Ginger Ale. I use a micro-grater and grate some ginger into a tall glass (to taste), add some Stevia (to taste), then pour in carbonated soda water (no sugar, no flavorings). Yum! I like lots of ginger so it tastes really hot!

Soy milk - I add a teaspoon of cocoa powder and some stevia. Chocolate milk!!! :)

I also like iced tea. I brew up a big cooking pot of tea, and refrigerate it. Add sliced lemon or orange. Pour it over ice. Yum! :)

P.S. If you have a Trader Joe store near you, they have Stevia pretty cheap.

John...aren't you limiting your carbs too much??? I found this in a write up about the MAD study done at John Hopkins:

From Science Daily...were placed on the modified Atkins diet. All patients were seen for free in the Johns Hopkins General Clinical Research Center.

The regimen restricted them to 15 grams of carbohydrates a day. "That's a few strawberries, some vegetables, or a bit of bread," says Kossoff. The diet offers most of its calories from fat-eggs, meats, oils and heavy cream-with as much protein and no-carb beverages as patients want.

As for the Soymilk thing, have you tried almond- or rice milk? My husband hates soymilk but will drink almond milk. I had to find an alternative since topopmax makes most milk products taste spoiled to me  I cook with it too, even use it to make mashed potatoes, lol. I only buy the original unflavored stuff though, the flavored...bleck.

Drink lotsa water even though you are bored with it...with all of the protein you are eating their could be an issue with kidney stones, the water keeps things flushed :)

I honestly don't know how much water it would take to dilute someones meds. Personally, I think it would take a lot. I know that I drink @ 100 oz a day of just water and it doesn't affect my meds at all...that doesn't include any of the other stuff i drink like green tea, coffee or almond milk.

Like endless said, you can spruce up your water :) Since you are trying to avoid artificial swettners as well try lemon, lime or crushed mint. You can try the Stevia...I'd recommend using the real deal though (the actual plant). I'm not sold on the crystalized stuff like Truvia now since they made it an artificial sweetmer in my book when they mixed it in with a processed stuff to compensate for the aftertaste.

I'm with Zoofemme about stevia. I get mine at the health food store and it's just plain stevia. Trader joes also has an unaltered kind, cheap. I wash shocked to see stevia plants at the nursery the other day. I'm not sure I'd know what to do with it!

Hey endless...with the stevia leaves you muddle/crush them like you do mint leaves. There is a little bitterness but I don't think it is anymore than there is with mint.

John --

You can drink as much water as you want -- it won't dilute your meds. The only concern with drinking water is if you drink an extreme amount (and I mean an extreme amount) without also getting electrolytes (like sodium and potassium). That's why marathon runners who are constantly hydrating themselves during a race drink sports drinks, not just plain water.

I was about to post the same thing, Nakamova. The target is to drink, in ounces, the same number that represents half your body weight. So,for someone that weighs 200 (just using that cause it's a nice even number) then 100 ounces of water a day is a target. About 12 cups. That's about 3 quarts a day! It may feel llike you're drinking a lot but you probably aren't, certainly not enough to result in an electrolyte imbalance because you'd KNOW it - you'd be feeling sick and achy and lightheaded. Also, you are drinking AND eating throughout the day, I'd imagine, so you are replenishing sodium and potassium. There is no need for a sports drink unless you are exercising or otherwise sweating for prolonged periods of time.

However, if you are not doing that and you seriously think you are drinking huge amounts of water then you might want to ensure renal function is normal.

If you are exercising a lot or even just, say, working in the yard a lot you can make a sports drink with salt and bicarbonate (and some sort of sweetener cause you'll want it!).

Xylitol is another good sweetener but I don't think it's any cheaper than stevia.

That does sound like a lot. Can you tell me where you got that info?

Jvere, I am trying to exercise pushing my 80lb ten year old daughter in her special needs stroller a few miles a day now that the weather is better, Do you have a recipe for the sports drink. I thought about boiling a little banana in it for flavor, sugar and potassium?

Thanks

To give you an everyday perspective of 100oz John, since it "sounds" like a lot...

That equals:

5 cans of soda pop
5 small bottles of water
5 20oz glasses of liquid
2 1/2 - 3 lg Gatorades
just under 5 Vendi no foam skinny Latte's from Starbucks
1 1/2 two liter bottles of soda pop
3 large bottle of water
5-6 large mugs of coffee or tea

For your homemade sports drink...try freezing your banana...drop it in a blender add a pinch of salt, the bicarb (not sure how much...a pinch?) and a splach of soy or almond milk. Blend together. SPORT SMOOTHIE :) The frozen banana is a great ice cream substitute!

HTH
