I am currently on 1500mg of keppra and 100mg of tegretol twice a day and i am having quite a few side affects as well as not sleeping does anyone else on these meds have the same problems?

2000mg of keppra and 150mg Vimpat. I'm not sure what the side effects of tegretol are (looked them up and drowsy is in there, too), but the two I take make me drowsy. If I'm very tired, I'll rapidly have simple-partials. At that point, I could probably fall asleep on a concrete floor.

Not to say your experience will be the same as mine, but I'm hyperactive and when my mind is going, I may not be able to sleep. Yesterday was a case like this during the day, when I wanted to nap. I would in no way attribute it to the drugs I am on.

Its certainly possible you are having trouble sleeping due to the drugs, but look at your diet. Write down what you eat and drink in a day. Maybe you'll find what else the problem may be. If you still think its the drugs, tell your doctor. Sleep is very very important.

I had to stop at 1500 mg keppra (total) as an add-on because of issues with sleep. I would get to sleep fine, but then would wake up with a racing mind and strange thoughts. The odd part was my breathing and pulse rates were perfectly normal. That relatively low dose of Keppra, though, was not enough for seizure control (but it did help with myoclonic activity) so another medication was added to help out.

Nsperlo i have mentioned it to my neuro but none of them are really bothered tbh, but thanks i will keep an eye on my diet. Masterjen the amount of keppra is the same for me, i totally dont understand any of it. seanwalker thanks i hope things work out for u too, the stupid thing is i have been telling my neuro for 3 year now this happens and i keep getting break through seizures and she said yesterda there may not be a cure and i have to put up wi them.

I would get a second opinion if your doctor is being that pessimistic over the whole ordeal. I know it's a tough thing to get into another neurologist but it might be a good idea. Especially if she's kept you on the same drugs three years in a row and hasn't seemed overly chuffed when you mention you still have problems.

Like Nsperlo said, keep a journal but also look into getting a second, or even third, opinion if you're not satisfied with what your current doctor is telling you.

Hi sassi, i have already had 3 different neuroligists, i have been on lamotrigine which gave me wrong thoughts, im on keppra and tegretol now which are making no difference, my neuro has wrote to another neuro who is meant to be a specialists in epilepsy when theres probs like mine where meds arent helping at all.

I've gotten used to not sleeping, especially with higher doses of aed's but i've found a really good way to get sleep. I started just doing exercises with resistance bands, which will usually get my body worn out. The bands are really cheap, they aren't lunky like free weights. Maybe that is an option? It is the only thing that works for me. Hope you start getting good rest soon.

Yikes. If an epileptologist is where it's at then... I guess that's where it's at. I dunno. I've never really known what's the best route to take and I'm currently staring down the face of having to choose a different doctor myself because I'm not satisfied with the fact that we're playing the wait and see game, and I've had another couple of seizures on top of it.

I really hate to be siding with any doctor as I like to air on the side of being an eternal optimist when it comes to E because I would hate for anyone to have to deal with it for the rest of their lives... I really don't want you to have refractory E. :( I'm keeping my fingers crossed that maybe the doctors are wrong and they just haven't found the cocktail right for you. Has the ketogenic diet been suggested? I dunno when/if they use that at all anymore or what the circumstances are behind it...
