When the neuro asked about head injuries and concussions and losing consciousness. I told him ... No. I didn't even think about the number of times I have hit my head. I played soccer for 13 years. I played four years of class 5A varsity ball and 2 years in college. I spent those six years playing for highly competitive teams. I also played ball year round. Between practices (many twice/day) and games, I probably headed soccer balls at least 2000 times a year. That was about 25 years ago ... I wonder if I am paying for it now.

I think concussion and trauma specialists are just starting to realize that small repetitive head trauma can potentially be as devastating as one big KO. I had a big ol' head injury when I was 5 that might be a cause for my epilepsy. But since my seizures didn't show up for another 30 years, I won't ever know for sure...

You might want to check out this article about cumulative brain trauma from heading the ball: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/06/130611082233.htm

I stumbled across that article when I was doing research on TBI for my special education emotional disturbance class. After seeing it, I thought that I had better tell the neuro about doing all those headers. I see him next week. It has been a long time since I have even thought about that period of my life.

Did you ever ask your parents about this? I wouldn't have known what had caused my epilepsy because I was a baby when the trauma happened. For me it was a near drowning. Like others, my tonic clonic seizures only started when I was 20 but my neurologist seems pretty sure I was having other kinds of seizures through childhood.

It was the doctor's fault that delivered me, that caused my epilepsy. He used forceps I took 72 hours to come into this world.I was diagnosed when I was 2 but started having sz's before than.
