My neurologist called me this morning and said it was "critically important that she speak with me." When we talked she said they found something and "it's probably not a tumor" but we need more tests and I am seeing her tomorrow and getting a second opinion.

Any thoughts? I am taking the rest of the day off to write and upload my comedy.

Sounds like she gave you just enough info to make you go crazy with worry... Do your best to put it aside for now. Let us know how things go.

Ha is this a thing lately or what?
I was recently told that too! 'It's likely not a tumor but we'll check it.'

I must say tho it's a bit hard to blame them for being cautious in what they say/confirming things etc. This would be an extremely hard field to be in, and how frustrating for a doc when they can't give you the answers not only that you seek but to keep you calm as well.

Nich is right, keeping the imagination in check is the best thing.

I hope everything is alright. Really wish the Dr told you more and didn't leave you hanging like that. Hope you get some better understanding of whats going on soon. Best of luck.
 
Hey Calvin,

I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry too much. If they said that whatever they found is probably not a tumor, it may be that what they saw is an edema (swelling) which can be the result of a mini-stroke. In that case they would want to check your cholesterol, maybe do an ultrasound of your arteries, and put you on cholesterol lowering drugs.

I say this because when I had my first seizure and had an MRI, it wasn't clear if the lesion they found was a tumor or edema from a mini-stroke, so they treated me as if I had had a stroke and put me on cholesterol lowering drugs (though my cholesterol wasn't that high) just in case. They only confirmed the tumor after I had another MRI the next month and the lesion was the same. If it had been swelling from a mini-stroke, it would have lessened or disappeared altogether.

This brings me to another point: if, and I say IF they find out it's a tumor - don't panic. There are different kinds, many are benign and/or quite treatable.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate what you said MuayThaiFighter about her giving me just enough info to panic but not enough to feel better. I was in serious panic mode all day. I think this doctor is not the one for me -- I have already found one who may be. I think she actively tries to scare me because she doesn't think I am taking this seriously enough. I have what I think is a healthy skepticism for things and have not done some of the things she told me I have to do.

The good news is I don't have a tumor -- something she knew when she called me, the problem was not in my MRI but the MRA (she was very unclear on which test had the issue when I talked to her and kept using the terms interchangeably -- she did the same thing today when she said I need a CT angiogram, she kept referring to is as an MR, i.e. "if you need us to call your insurance before the MR..." and "call us a week after you get the MR..."). The issue (I got a copy of the report from her) is that they detected a "2 to 3 mm sized outpouching in the region of the left distal internal cartoid artery." I am scheduled to have a CTA on Tuesday.

What really annoys me is I am scared enough, I do not need my doctors to scare me. And it pisses me off that she thinks I am not taking this seriously enough. During one big seizure recently, I re-herniated a disk in my back, gave myself concussion number 13 (at least) and royally screwed up my knee (seriously, a month and a half later and I still have trouble putting weight on it). The last thing I want is to go through that again.

well im glad it isn't a tumor and im glad she got back to you to explain stuff. Either way you shouldn't be frustrated with your physician. Jeeze that many things in one year is to much for anyone let alone that many injuries after one seizure. Don't let the Docs get you down, they get paid either way. Remember, they work for you not the other way around.
 
I'm happy to read that was NOT a tumor. I understand that Dr. have to run test to rule things out, but to have Handle the way she did--well that is BAD!!!!!!

I glad you have found another DR.
 
Sounds like you're doing all the right things Calvin.

I had a similar scare after my first MRI. My neurologist said I had a "chronic dissection of the carotid artery" which can lead to stroke. Turned out it was a misreading of the MRI. My neurologist had me do a second one, and then when I asked about the chronic dissection she just said "oh you don't have to worry about that any more." I think she was embarrassed that she had misread the first one.

doctors can scare the crap out of you just by talking about something and also holding stuff back. A few years ago I had an mri and my primary called me asking how my sinuses where and if my neruo doc had called me with the rest of the results and when I said no I got from her "who well then you should call them"

turns out I have a scar on my brain about the size of a pen tip. I had another one like 3 years ago and my primary called and said I needed to go to the ER right away, the blood vessels are abnormal. turns out its just the way they grew(one side of my jaw is smaller then the other).
