My throat and mouth are constantly full of mucus. I suspect this has something to do with a change from sodium valproate to lamotrigine 8 months ago. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as it is driving me mad.

Hi johnwalker587, welcome to CWE!

I'm on lamotrigine and haven't had any problems with excess mucus in my throat and mouth. But I found something similar mentioned in the CWE archive:
http://www.coping-with-epilepsy.com/forums/f20/new-member-lamictal-problems-12791/

It's also mentioned as a possible Lamictal problem in this thread:
http://www.crazymeds.us/CrazyTalk/index.php/topic/633-how-to-deal-with-lamictal-post-nasal-drip/

Definitely bring it up with your neuro and with your regular doc as well. It could be that a slight reduction in dose would help, or there might be a safe over-the-counter decongestant they could recommend for you to try.

Some dietary adjustments might help too. See: http://allergies.knoji.com/foods-that-cause-excessive-mucus-and-foods-that-reduce-mucus/

Best,

Hi and thanks for the help. Been fit all my life, no meds for anything. Very lucky, I was 81 on Saturday. Two years ago I had a seizure on holiday after slipping off a couch on to a tiled floor, then another, 6 wks later. Sodium valproate served me well for 16mths then changed to Lamotrigine on too low a dose and had a 3rd fit(asleep). Just about to get my driving licence back it was a blow. Anyway, after 8mths my driving licence should soon be here and apart from the mucus problem life is very good.

welcome to CWE johnwalker I've never had any problems with excessive mucus either and I've taken a lot of differerent meds in my life.

I take lamictal and only have blurry vision from it. If you are having a mucus problem in your throat, you might try a neti pot to see if that will help. I find it very helpful when I get a sinus infection.

Don't fancy the neti pot but thanks for the suggestion. I think I will go back to my GP to change to a different drug.
