Ok, I have been having seizures since april. Not to long after starting a new antidepresant. I stopped taking the medication even though the doctors were insistsnt that the medication was not causing them. I did 4 days for an eeg study and they found no signs of epilepsy. I have been seizure free for 5 weeks now.

Doctors tell me I cant drive for 3 months bust searching the nebraska legislature there are no laws that require a "seizure-free period". The only talk about it is when you go to renew you drivers license and it asks if you have had seizures in the last 3 months.

Does ayone know about how to get accurate information. Half of the epilepsy sites say no limit on driving while the other half says 3 months.

Any help on getting accurate information would be fantastic.

If you have a seizure when driving in the time the doctor tells you not to drive you can expect to be taken to court for any damages.

3 months is the shortest I've heard of.

I've given up driving twice each for six months. I race cars. Not easy.

Good luck, my friend.

I contacted the state dmv and they said there is no seizure free period required. The only time you have to be seizure free for 3 months is when you apply for or renew your license. I just need a doc to give me the green light. The dmv said there used to be a seizure free law but the law was removed.

Dr reccomended 3 months seizure free. However state law has no seizure free laws. And the dr only made a recommendation and not an order.

I have been seizure free for 5 1/2 weeks now and feel safe to drive.

So I can legaly drive and I am not worried about seizing while driving.

What are the risks of driving against dr recommendations?

A lawyer would be a good one to ask that question. Most would be willing to give you half an hour of their time for free, especially if they are an attorney who specializes in driving infractions. I would imagine if you hit and injured someone when you knew you recently had seizures might mean a huge settlement for the injured parties. I'm curious if in your state your prosecuting attorneys might try to press charges on something.

"I stopped taking the medication even though the doctors were insistsnt that the medication was not causing them. I did 4 days for an eeg study and they found no signs of epilepsy."

a few notes on these... if doctors (esp. when it's more than one) are insisting it wasn't due to the meds, it's worth following up. i'm assuming these were regular phD's, who from one to the next may or may not know much about E, so there's no guarantee they were right, but no guarantees they were wrong either. really it's worth checking out with a specialist just to be safe.
as for eeg's, they aren't 'perfect' in showing seizures and epilepsy. what made them say 'no signs of it'? did you have any seizures in those four days? if so it needs delving into, if not it still doesn't prove you do or don't have epilepsy-caused seizures. testing is key. and trust all of us on here who say it's 'better not to drive'... been in an accident, though minor, myself, and hindsight is no fun.

In my state (Oregon) it's 6 months. My doctor didn't report it to DMV. But I do it on the honor system. I don't want to get sewed if she says I can't and I do and get in a wreck.
