hi all,

I'm new to this site my sister found it for me.

I'm now seeing an epilepsy specialist and she saying the best way for me to find out if surgery is going to help with my scare to have a 5 day EEG done to find out if the scare on the left side is whats making me have them now.

Anyone have any answers?

Well, if

there is a scar on your brain that might be causing the seizures (was it found on an MRI??) then a 5 day EEG WOULD be a good thing, especially if it's a VEEG. Even if it's an ambulatory EEG, 5 days' worth of recording will still tell the doctors quite a bit.

Take a look around in the different nooks and crannies here...you will find quite a bit of information, especially in the Kitchen and the Library. So kick up your feet, and check things out. Our host, Mr B, has built us an AWESOME home here. Hopefully someone will bring some fresh coffee (decaf) around...I keep burning mine because I keep falling asleep, LOL.

There is a Padded Room for those days that you need to vent, so feel free...

Take care.

Hi Cher - WELCOME

One thing you might consider discussing with your doctor is, IF there is a scar, and they recommend surgery, how do they prevent more scaring? It is my understanding that surgery does cause scaring.

I would ask your doctor if s/he has ever studied neurofeedback. It trains the brain to use more of the brain, so that it can sometimes provide a way that the brain does not have to use the damaged area.

Plus, it is my understanding that the only way they can find out information from a VEEG, is IF you have a seizure during the time you are "hooked" up. There are also focal points that are deep in the brain, and the EEG can't pick it up. Seems to find the exact spot, they would have to do brain mapping.

How long have you had seizures?

Hi Cher --

Even if you do know what's causing the seizures, there's no guarantee that any particular treatment (including surgery) will be 100% successful, so be sure to ask your doctor a lot of questions about what she hopes to discover via the EEG, and what happens if the results are inconclusive. Everyone has a different experience with seizures and with treatments (as you'll discover on this site), so feel free to ask a lot of questions here as well.

I've been having seizures since I was 11, when I was a baby my mom told me that there was swelling though my soft spot, so my mom(retired LPN) is pretty sure that how long I've had the scare.

I've looked up different sites and found out the most used surgery is a hole in the hair line about the size of a little finger and they get the scare tissue out that way with extra fluid and lightly suck out the tissue as it becomes loose.

I understand that another scare can form, my mom has had 2 back surgery's and needed to go to a pain clinic to remove the scaring.

I see the doctor next month my parents and my sister want to go and talk with the doctor(I've had 3 seizures since november of last year)
