We received the report today and it says that Nicole is showing a type of "hot oppositionality" that is usually due to over-stimulation and a tendancy to overload and shut down. When she shuts down, she becomes rigid and nonresponsive. It states that there may be justification for considering a special education program. It does state that she certainly would meet requirements for "other health impairment." Due to the seizures. It also states that as part of the IEP evaluation, we get an occupational therapy evaluation. The purpose is to start a teaching program using the "how is your engine running" approach. Her oppositional behavior is driven by over-stimulation. With this program she can learn to improve her awareness of her accelerating agitation, label it appropriately, identify how her "engine" is running and learn techniques to settle herself down. He also will be doing a full evaluation this summer.
We do have a meeting at school on the 6th. We have already informed them that we want an IEP for her based on the neuropsych's report. I sure hope that this meeting goes well. So far, they have been working with us with a few small bumps in the road.
Now I will be reading my wrightslaw books and making notes before the meeting. I will also be giving them an article regarding education and Epilepsy that I found on the National Epilepsy site.
