We received the report today and it says that Nicole is showing a type of "hot oppositionality" that is usually due to over-stimulation and a tendancy to overload and shut down. When she shuts down, she becomes rigid and nonresponsive. It states that there may be justification for considering a special education program. It does state that she certainly would meet requirements for "other health impairment." Due to the seizures. It also states that as part of the IEP evaluation, we get an occupational therapy evaluation. The purpose is to start a teaching program using the "how is your engine running" approach. Her oppositional behavior is driven by over-stimulation. With this program she can learn to improve her awareness of her accelerating agitation, label it appropriately, identify how her "engine" is running and learn techniques to settle herself down. He also will be doing a full evaluation this summer.

We do have a meeting at school on the 6th. We have already informed them that we want an IEP for her based on the neuropsych's report. I sure hope that this meeting goes well. So far, they have been working with us with a few small bumps in the road.

Now I will be reading my wrightslaw books and making notes before the meeting. I will also be giving them an article regarding education and Epilepsy that I found on the National Epilepsy site.

Interesting. I didn't know programs like that existed. Thanks for posting and best wishes for Nicole!

That's exactly what happens to me,
simply put; and has been for decades!
Hence why the excessive Neuropsych
tests at the School sometimes 2-3 times
a year, and why I would be up and
down like a roller coaster.

That's exactly why they had me all
preplanned 2 years before I graduated
and all set up and stated I wouldn't be
eligible to gain lawful employment for
that reason.

The best way to put it is "Short Circuit"
or "Operation Overload" or "Malfunction
Junction". I can't handle it all going all
at once; my system will shut down ...
Think about the Old Computer Windows
Operating System's BLUE SCREEN OF
DEATH .... (#&#*&%#%!@!!!!!!)

That's the BEST illustration I can best
present it to you as how the brain would
go in such manner ... The Blue Screen
of Death ... The only way to get out of
it all is "REBOOT" (sleep, meds, etc).

I don't know if there's a difference
between your daughter and I, but when
I go into "Malfunction Junction" - aka
Shut Down - becoming non-responsive,
not compliant, in state of confusion,
incoherent, or even into psychosis - it
trips into seizure mode. This goes in
conjunction with the seizure mode, and
trying to get me OUT of it is difficult,
the only thing anyone can do is just
wait it out and let me "REBOOT". Which
can take anywhere from few minutes to
hours.

This is what I mean and imply when I
state "I am not in sync or I'm only
partially in sync" - I'm not running in
full mode.

By the time I was in Senior High School
the School Board System had a Neuro-
psychiatrist who worked WITH me to
look for ways around it to make up for
these shortcomings and pitfalls, in
other words "OVERRIDE". Some of his
plan / ideas worked. But many of them
of what he had did not.

He tried everything he could drum up
with (bless his heart), and even trying
some alternatives of his own - and a
couple did work.

However, that was years ago - I'm sure
today they've progressed and learned
more that your daughter will have a
much better chance than what I did
and underwent.

YES - There is such thing as BRAIN
FREEZE and it's not just from drinking
ICEE or cold products too quickly.

I still struggle with this; it's even
recorded on my vEEG's and they've had
to deal with me in Neuro Floor and ER
whereas; now the Paramedics, ER, and
the Medical Personnel - they KEEP ME
AWAKE after I've had a seizure all because
of the complications of the issue of my
brain shutting down and becoming
non-responsive.

Our schools don't have a neuropsych that I know of. Fortunately, this does not trigger any seizures and thankfully we have not seen any seizures since August. I'm glad that we now know what we are dealing with and can work on helping her.

I wonder if the School System
discontinued this via Budget
cuts? Because it was part of the
IEP Program - and if Therapy
was needed; it was provided.
I still have my old carbon copies
from my old school days.

It's really a shame because it
was quite benefiting to all of
the students who had Neuro
issues!

I DO know if was part of the
Federal & State Grants; so it
wouldn't be surprising at some
point years later it was given
the chopping block, like a lot
of other things.

:(
