Wonderful! I love to hear stories (even when it breaks Mom's heart) of a child going after his/her dreams. Seems like you have two dreamers between your daughter and her skating and now your son.

You've done something mighty right---kudos:clap:!!!---LMT

I was able to be off meds and be 'controlled' long enough to be enlisted myself.
I miss the honor and discipline of the Corps.
My BFF is also a Marine. We can talk for endless hours, and it's cuz he is willing to listen. In fact, my best friends are Marines. Nobody really has the Espirit de Corps that we have.

My son did it.
Today I am a very proud parent of a U.S. Marine

I understand about the counting Robin. I'm counting days till my son comes home too. He'll get 30 days home before they deploy him. They do make us proud sometimes, don't they? Congratulations on raising a fine son.

Congratulations Robin! As an employee of the Dept of Veterans Affairs, I have a very special place in my heart for our servicemen. God bless you both!

My husband is full-time Air Guard and I know the sacrifices it takes to make a career of the military. Your son deserves a pat on the back for his willingness to be courageous and you deserve a pat on the back for letting him go! Congrats to you both!

I think if they had a pride meter I would make it sizzle.

How wonderful that we have so many willing to protect us all.
God bless all who are a part of the U.S. Military.

super duper

In my day, we had occupational specialties. Mine was electronic communication.
What is your son going to be doing? Where will I be stationed? I had my orders when I left basic. Was assigned to "29 stumps", which is very beautiful, oddly enough. (or it was 30 yrs ago)
I am excited about the future.

A big THANK YOU to your son Robin. The apple does not fall far from the tree when it comes to helping others.

Give him a firm handshake from me.

:shake:

Woo Hoo!!! Congratulations Robinn! And tell your son thank you from all of us. There is nothing like the pride felt by families of military.

Kinda funny thinking that the little boy whose scraped knees you kissed to make feel better, who you tucked in at night, who used to bring you flowers, and come in covered with dust, dirt and smelling like little boy/puppy is now all grown up huh? Do you still see the little boy when you see him in his uniform? :)

Right next to his Military picture I grabbed from the video and his HS graduation picture is a snapshot of him at two. He is crying... He has grown up, but is still the same gentle soul. Now he is going to become a leader. I have no doubt in my mind.

Shelley - his MOS is Data Systems and he will be training at 29 Palms. This is only two hours from our house. He is excited about that news.

29 palms, etc

That area used to be beautiful. I'm sure that it still is.
That whole area used to be called 29 Palm Springs. 29 palms, the base, and the city of Palm Spring separated and became their own entities.
There is Joshua Tree National Monument
Morongo Valley has an oasis
It can be hot, but it is a dry heat and really isn't bad. It gets cold in winter though, and is surprisingly nippy.
Data systems must be a relatively new MOS, cuz 29 palms was just basically electronics and avionics.
I hope he is into being geeky, cuz he will be trained thouroughly.
Good luck to him.

We were just in Palm Spring / Desert Springs over the Spring Break. My son has done quite a lot of rock climbing at Joshua Tree while he was a Boy Scout. I think that he is just pleased that he will be near many of his friends. Easy for a quick visit occasionally.

I was told that anything to do with "Land" is trained at 29 Palms. That which is involved with "Air" is done in GA. I also was told that Intell is located at 29 Palms. I see positive experiences for him here. It seems that they have Data Systems at both locations. They place them according to need. It is a computer job.

Palm Springs is going through quite a bit of a depression. Blocks were vacant, and I never remember seeing that before. It could be because they are developing the area and upgrading it. It is quite dated, compared to the other areas, such as Desert Hot Springs, and Palm Desert.

I am sure we will learn more after we bring him home next friday

Quaint

29 palms is/was a military town, and most of the buildings there went up in a hurry to satisfy the folks that lived off base. They did lot of construction for base housing while my (then) husband and I were there.
They just became the air ground combat training center during that time. It was just called the worlds largest Marine base in the world before that. I don't think the town complained, because it was way over the desert at the time.
They also did a bunch of construction, and came up with new WM barracks and nco barracks, plus a new base exchange shopping center, new gym and physical fitness center.
I imagine that it is all old and dated by now.

My son completed his Military Occupational Specialty MOS and will graduate tomorrow as a Data Network Specialist. He has suggested that we not attend this graduation, so I am going to respect his wishes. He will be home in the afternoon for the Thanksgiving weekend. It was a year ago this weekend that Eric came and told us of his decision.

On Sunday he will report to Miramar, CA for his Permanent Duty Station. This is where the Blue Angels fly from, so I am sure it will be exciting at times. The rumors are that he will be deployed sometime in the spring. So I hope he will come home as often as he can before then. Each time he gets leave, he will be brought back to Miramar, so that is convenient. For those not familiar with CA, Miramar is near La Jolla, north of San Diego.

I am going to have a lot to give thanks for this Thanksgiving.

Congrats Robin! You probably made the pride meter blow up hehehe. Thank your son from me and mine. All service man/woman deserves our respect and gratitude!

That's a pretty good field. Should lead to numerous opportunities when he's done with the service.

My older brother enlisted with the Air Force back in the day and didn't have much choice in his field/assignment. Because of his aptitude for languages, they made him learn Serbo-Croation for some sort of analyst position.
