Hello, I have had essential tremors since the age of 12. I remember the day I realized my hands were shaking. I was in grade school and eating breakfast; my hands were shaking so bad that I couldn't eat my cereal. Over the years the shaking is still in my hands but has moved into my head and at times while sitting I can feel my whole body shaking. Its all quite aggervating; I always get the stares when I go out in public or people automatically assume I do drugs, which is disheartning because people don't take the time to think it might actually be something else and not the persons fault at the reason they shake. I get asked alot if I am cold. Anyone else have essential tremors?

Yes, I have this too. It can be very tiring. My whole body will do it and is hard to deal with at times. People always are like are you ok?

Have you spoken to your neuro about it? Some AED's can also cause tremors as can some neurological conditions.

Hi dixiemom29, welcome to CWE!

It may be worth reviewing any medications you are on to see if the tremor can be better treated. There are several medicines that can treat essential tremor, and you might benefit from making a switch. You might also get your thyroid tested -- hyperthyroidism can sometimes cause essential tremor or make it worse.

And there are alternative treatments to consider: Acupuncture, Hypnosis, Massage, and/or Biofeedback.

Best,
Nakamova

Hi dixiemom29
sounds like you have a big challenge there.
But stick with it, miracles do happen, and the medics are learning all the time.

I have a tremor which is a side effect from my medication.
And yes it does get worse if I am around other people as I am more aware of it.
There are some situations I avoid, such as trying to carry a drink as I know half of it will end up on the floor.
My friends and work colleagues are extremely understanding, and I have found the majority of people are more than happy to help out if I need assistance.

However I would rather have the tremor than fits, so am unlikely to change my medication.

I have been getting the shakes in my leg or hands for years but it doesn't happen very often so i don't worry to much about it. My leg will sometimes start to shake but it tends to happen more when I'm nervous but my hand will also sometimes shake a little.

I spoke to my neurologist about it last year & he said he said it was essential tremor but wasn't to concerned as it doesn't happen that often & isn't affecting my life. Another forum member once told me that magnesium can help.
