Hello, I'm new here and I am trying to get off my meds for my epilepsy. I am looking for natural alternatives to help me get them under control. I can't afford the medicine anymore. So if anyone has idea's on diets or vitamins I can take it would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi Jammie, welcome!

We would ALL love to get off meds and be seizure-free on natural alternatives! I wish you luck in the attempt, and urge you to keep your neurologist in the loop. You probably know this already, but it's very important that you taper off your medication as slowly as possible and in small increments in order to prevent withdrawal seizures or side effects.

Most of the alternative treatment approaches have mixed records, and they won't necessarily work for everyone. Some can help reduce the number of seizures a person has, but not control them entirely. Some dietary approaches that seem to help are the Modified Atkins Diet and the Low Glycemic Index Diet. For a good run-down of what's out there, see http://www.coping-with-epilepsy.com/index.php?p=alternative-treatments

It can also help to identify and avoid triggers. More info about that here: http://www.coping-with-epilepsy.com/forums/f22/proactive-prescription-epilepsy-1254/

Best,
Nakamova
