Hi I am new here, this is my first forum in regards to epilepsy. I have a few questions and curiosities in regards to epilepsy and i am hoping someone on here might be able to shed some light on the subject for me.
i have suffered with epilepsy for a long time and have only recently been told that my form of epilepsy if petit mal. I used to black out completely as a child but I don't black out anymore.
when i have a seizure, i will shake and lose all strength in my limbs, afterwards my mind is often clouded and fuzzy, I feel down and miserable and all i want to do is go to bed. I was wondering if there is anything I can do to help to speed up the recovery after an 'episode'?
I was also wondering if there is a connection between food and recovery after a seizure?

Hi VS, welcome to CWE!

If there's no loss of consciousness, you may be experiencing a different kind of seizure called a simple partial seizure. Simple partials can have a wide variety of symptoms depending on where they originate on the brain, but it sounds like yours are particularly motor-related. You might want to check in with your neurologist to review your diagnosis as well as your medications.

There's not much to do to hasten "recovery" time. Generally, the brain and body know how much rest "they" need before putting you back in action. The post-seizure time is basically like a bad hangover. Everyone has different remedies, and what works for one person might not work for another. Here are a few things to try, hopefully others will chime in too: If you are sore or headache-y, consider taking a pain-reliever like ibuprofen, and then find a good comfortable spot to lie down and rest. A dark location can feel. It can help to eat and drink a little if you are already hungry or dehydrated at the time of the seizure, but if you feel nauseous, don't force it. Probably best to avoid acidic foods, big meals, or anything that you know will stress your digestion and/or slow you down.

For many, there are definitely connections between food and seizures -- usually with certain foods and food additives as triggers. So if you know you are sensitive to certain foods (such as caffeine, aspartame, msg) avoid them before during and after a seizure. There's more info here about ways to be proactive with your health, as well as specific nutritional issues to consider: http://www.coping-with-epilepsy.com/forums/f22/proactive-prescription-epilepsy-1254/

Best,
