Hi everyone! My name is Sherri! I was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 7 when I had my first of several grand mal seizures. I continued to have seizures until I was 21 or 22. At the age of 22 I was informed by the neurologist that I had outgrown my epilepsy. For the last 20+ years I had been seizure free. 2 weeks ago I left for work and tripped in the parking lot I caught myself with my hands and sustained a mildly displaced fracture of my 5th metacarpal. Within 5 minutes I had a seizure. I have read here how it can come back. My new neuro doc immediately started me on Keppra and said he would take the med forever if he were me. I have had an EEG and MRI. The EEG was done after starting Keppra. Does that make sense to yall??? I was informed I couldnt drive for a min of 3 months. Is it crazy of me to think to that I could have had that seizure because I have a lower seizure threshold and I was in pain??? Opinions are welcome!!! TIA

I would say that it is possible that your seizure threshold was lowered due to the pain as this would act like a stress to your body. Anything else also going on that could have created a combined effect along with the pain to lower your seizure threshold, such as other atypical stress going on, an illness, poor sleep, etc.?
I don't know in your case if having the EEG done after starting Keppra will make a difference or not. How much time passed between starting the medication and the EEG? If it was several weeks, then your doctor may have have felt it was more important to get you on medication right away than delay for the sake of the EEG.

My epilepsy was diagnosed with a sleep deprived EEG when i was a kid. They did a reg EEG. I started on the meds 8 days before the EEG but I didnt take the keppra that morning. Thank you for responding
 
Hi Sherrirenee, welcome to CWE!

I agree with Jen, the pain could have triggered the seizure. But because of your [distant] prior history, it's hard to know whether it's a fluky seizure or an indication that you may be in for more.

Has you already gotten the report on your EEG? If so, what did it show? Even if it was done while you were on meds, it could still provide useful information in the form of brainwave patterns that are associated with epilepsy. That was the case for me — even when I was overmedicated on Dilantin, my brain still showed interictal (between seizure) patterns that are characteristic of epilepsy.

Has your neuro ever taken an epilepsy drug? :) It's certainly your call if you want to stay on Keppra, or stay on epilepsy meds altogether. It can be a tough decision (particularly if your driving may be at risk). It might make sense to hang in there with the Keppra for the three months (assuming it doesn't have intolerable side effects for you), to get a sense of how you feel, and then revisit the question of meds then.
