Hello, i am wondering if anyone on here has had gelastic seizures? I am 40 yrs. old, and started having them about 6 mos. ago. It is very hard to find any info on this type of seizure in adults. Thanks.

Hi Todd - Welcome to CWE!

I have to admit, this is a new one on me. But we are relatively new to the world of seizure disorders. My daughter was diagnosed 2 yrs ago this June.

Do you lose conciousness or memory of the event?

I do know that some can have a symptom of this along with other symptoms as well. Rebecca mentioned one day in class she had an episode of laughter and didn't know why. But she is a teen and I use to laugh at the silliest things.

Rebecca is currently undergoing neurofeedback therapy, and it is working beautifully. She is currently med free.

:hello: Todd!

Welcome to CWE! Gelastic Seizures are also known
as Reflex Seizures or Reflex Epilepsy or Gelastic Epilepsy
and has a lot of names! I have it and unfortunately
still have it! My son thinks it's cute ~ *blush* ~ but
from time to time, I will laugh in my sleep:

Here's some links that will help you understand
Reflex / Gelastic Seizures - for it is not limited just
to "laughing", it can also be crying, heat, startle,
and so much more involved. Reflex & Gelastic are
often used 'interchangeably'.

Hope the below information helps you a lot!

Hi Todd, welcome to the forum. :hello:

Hi Robin, To answer your questions, I never remeber the seizure, but I do remain conscious.
they usually last 1 to 3 mins. and happen 3-4 times per day every 10-12 days. Thanks for replying, I hope the best for your daughter.

What type of meds are you on?
thanks, todd

It will be totally up to your Neuro or
Epi to determine what will
work for you and it all determines
what is revealing on your
EEG. Everyone is different, so what
works for one individual may not
necessarily work for the other.

Hope this helps!

Hi Todd! Welcome to CWE. As you can see, we're a really friendly group. So feel free to ask questions, and if you ever need to rant, check out the padded room. :)
