Hi - I just found this website and look forward to familiarizing myself with it.
I have a 6 year old son who has taken Keppra for tonic clonic and absence seizures from the age of one. He has been well regulated (we are very, very thankful). He will start kindergarten this fall, and I am in the beginning stages of trying to obtain an IEP for him. He does not have any appreciable delays at this time, but with epilepsy we are always concerned that delays might develop due to epilepsy, medication side effects, etc. He also has asthma, and is dysfluent. We have obtained speech therapy for his dysfluency and his speech therapist has told us that he is so mild right now that he will not qualify for services through speech. I am filling out the necessary paperwork for our elementary school currently.
1. I was told that: after filling out the initial paperwork that they would send it to the diagnostician at our elem school who will meet with an administrator and special ed/general ed teacher to determine if my son needs to be evaluated during an SST meeting.
2. I was told that we do not need to fill out OHI forms at this point until they decide if he needs to be evalated based on the paperwork. When I gently pushed this point and requested OHI forms I was not given an acknowledgement that I had formally requested them but referred to someone else to speak to with 'any questions I might have'.
Questions:
1. I thought that I had a right to request an evaluation for my son even if the school does not feel it is necessary.
2. The OHI forms are integral to the SST meeting to determine if he qualifies for an evaluation and/or services.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am already sensing some resistance from my school district at this very early stage.
