My daughter just had an eeg done due to a few fainting episodes she had recently. while the neurologist does not believe that the fainting was related to anything neurologic, my daughters eeg came back "abnormal". She talked about a bunch of things that made no sense to me about left brain yada yada and then mentioned the possiblity of benign rolandic epilepsy? We are in the process of getting insurance preapproval for a veeg and an mri with and without contrast. Any insight into this would be great. What to expect from the veeg, etc. My daughter just had her ninth birthday a few weeks ago. Also my daughter has been diagnosed with ADHD Inattentive Type. Thanks in advance!

Hi auntb521, welcome to CWE!

A video EEG is usually a longer-term EEG conducted in the hospital. It can sometimes yield more info than a regular EEG because the docs can look for a correlation between the physical symptoms and what registers from the sensors. BRE seizures often occur during sleep, so an overnight EEG may also help to pick them up. Here's a thread about video EEG that may be of interest: http://www.coping-with-epilepsy.com/forums/f23/thoughts-veeg-12017/

Like the EEG, the MRI is a standard test they do when epilepsy is a possibility. It's used to look for any structural/vascular issues that could be contributing. It's not unusual for the MRI to come up negative in epilepsy, though.

Your daughter's ADHD may in fact be epilepsy-related. Kids with BRE can have some learning difficulties or problems thinking or concentrating. You might consider neurofeedback -- it can potentially help with both seiures and attention issues. My nephew was diagnosed with ADHD a few years ago, he is now getting tests done - that is EEG and rest to rule out epilepsy. The doctors seem to think its related to ADHD. Nakamova advice is good and you might want to follow it up.

Hi

I just thought id add a extra bit of info, my 5 year old son has just been diagnosed with adhd as well as having autism symtoms and he also has a form of epilepsy known as tuberose sclerosis complex, his paedetrician told me that the adhd medicines cant be given while seizures are unstable and also that the adhd meds can often cause seizures.

Is your daughter already on meds?

all the best

Stacey
