seizures
Hi everybody, I am a male in my early fifties I have had grand Mal seizures off and on since I have been young. After a period of a little over a year they are starting up again. My neurologist doesn't seem very intrested and just put me on 1000mg of Keppra in addition to my 600mg of Keppra which seems to be making me Moody and irritable. Does anybody have advice on the.medicine or finding a new doctor. Thanks.

Jezy

I would look for a new doctor, but finding a new one is not easy.

That is what I am finding, I agree with your quote about marriage, lol.

Hi, and first off welcome to CWE.
I agree with Fedup that getting the input from another neurologist may be warranted. It can take a few weeks for one's body to adapt to a medication increase or a new medication (personally I've had it take as long as 6 weeks), but if side effects are unacceptable/intolerable even early on then a medication change or adjustment may be warranted. Increasing a dose slowly can help avert or minimize side effects, even if it is slower than the so-called standard dosage titration.

İ think the side effects are a little better than they were initially, but they hit me like a ton of brinks and I still had a seizure. I should have asked more about the med.

I still have nocturnal seizures every now and than my last one I cried out and scared my dog to death. I had it couple days before my appointment see my neuro , around the 7th this month.

I will usually cry out or scream at the start of one to my wife. The next day I am usually totally out of it, memory is bad and huge headaches. What meds are you taking.

I take 900 mg Tegretol Topamax 500MG and Fycompa 6MG

Keppra I'm allergic to.

A lot of people seem to have problems with Keppra, I hope the other meds are working I may ask about them.

Hi Jezy,

I have been on Keppra for about 10 years and I have no problem with it. My neurologist told me to take Vitamin B Complex. Keppra depletes the Vitamin B and that is what causes the mood swings and etc.

I am on 2500 mg of Keppra each day.

Welcome to CWE. CWE was made by Bernard out of love for his wife Stacy. That love permeates throughout the whole forum.

It seems to have different effects on different people I am starting to take vitamin B, thanks.

You are welcome. Keep me updated as to how the Keppra with Vitamin B works.

Hi Jezy,

You can try some searches on side effects of keppra, and then ask your pharmacist (or do more searching) on how to treat the side effects. Some searches you may want to try are "keppra side effects homocysteine"
"keppra side effects" "metabolic acidosis"

If the two side effects above show up, try searching:

"homocysteine" "psychiatric symptoms"
"metabolic acidosis psychiatric symptoms"
From there you can try these:

"homocysteine" "psychiatric symptoms" "treatment"

"metabolic acidosis psychiatric symptoms" "treatment"

I hope you can find another neurologist and ask the new one to be sensitive to the side effects and help you manage them without more drugs. Your pharmacist may also be a good resource. I have gotten some help in the past by contacting the company who manufactured a drug and asking to speak to their medical specialist.

Thanks, will do I have done a little and the side effects seem similar to me. I am having a problem communicating with my doctor I may look for another he was assigned to me after the last one left. I hAd a blood level test done today. Thanks for all the help I appreciate it.
