Hi xsimonex, welcome to CWE!

The epilepsy diagnosis just means you've had more than one seizure. It doesn't mean anything about the kind, the cause, or the prognosis. It's fairly common for the MRI to be negative -- it's relatively rare that there's an obvious structural cause for the seizures, such as a lesion or an aneurysm. As for the EEG, many folks who definitely have epilepsy never have a positive EEG. The test can help confirm an epilepsy diagnosis, but not necessarily rule one out.

When you say the consultant said you shouldn't have been put on the Epilim, did you mean that particular medication, or that you shouldn't have been medicated at all? Depending on the kind of seizure, it's fairly standard practice to medicate after one or more have occurred -- both for safety's sake, and to prevent the brain from getting in the habit of seizing.

Are you having trouble with side effects from the medication? In that case you should talk to your neurologist about either modifying the dose, or trying a different medication.

I hope you feel free to ask questions and post again. CWE members have a lot of good information and support to offer.

Best,
Nakamova

I understand your shock. When I had a seizure eight years ago, it came out of the blue and they put me on medicine showing something on my EEG but since I have had no seizures so I was taken off the medicine. Last June, I got one and since have had two. So, go to a good neurologist and make sure that if you do not like the medicine then find one that you can handle. They all have side effects but some are much worse depending on you. Let me know if you have questions..this site is helpful. I never use websites as they overwhelmed me but this one makes you feel less alone.

Epilim includes fatigue and stomach problems ("disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain") on its list of common side effects, so it probably is responsible for your heartburn.

Epilim is the AED with the highest risk of birth defects, so perhaps your doctor was concerned about your being on it for that reason.
