Hey all!

New to the forum, so I thought it best to introduce myself and explain a little about my condition.

I'm a 23 year old from Australia. I am sporty and in the gym many times a week. I'm as fit as a fiddle. Or so I thought.

I've had 1 confirmed tonic-clonic seizure on the 2nd of June this year. I had been drinking more than enough for one night. Woke up the next morning and had what I think are called absences. I had two or three of those which lasted not much longer than a 1/4 of a second. Just long enough for me to drop a glass of water and recover in time to almost catch it. I just attributed that to a really bad hangover. About 15 minutes later I had the seizure that lasted about 4 minutes and then I was not responding for about 20. I woke up eventually very confused and feeling sleepy. I was taken by ambulance to hospital and during the 15 minute trip, fully recovered and was back to feeling fine. I've since been diagnosed with a mild form of epilepsy that they believe will be controlled well with the drug epilim.

So far the condition hasn't been much more than an inconvenience. Not allowed to drive until December and I suppose the anxiety of not knowing if it was going to happen again or when or where I may be.

I did a little research into the drug I will be starting in the next day or so (I know you should never do this, as most of the time, none of it ever happens) It sounds awful what some people have had to go through on it. Has anyone had any experiences with epilim?

I don't know if I am putting this all down so it is off my chest or whether I'm hoping for re-assurances from people. I'm relatively lucky compared to some and I don't want to sound like I am whinging!

It definitely hasn’t been all bad though. I haven’t drank a drop of alcohol in the 3 months since and have lost 5 kilos, which puts me in great shape for the upcoming football pre-season.

Thanks all for listening to all of this. I look forward to contributing when I can :)

Much appreciated.

Welcome Old Holbz!

I don't know much about anything since my first seizure was last Thursday, but I do know it helps me a lot to keep a journal of meds I take at the dose I take them and anything new and different that I notice that goes on with my body so I can see if there is something I need to tell the doc incase I forget. I bought it small enough I could carry it with me every where.. though I cant drive now. I started my anti seizure meds for my severe migraine that has lasted over a year and a half straight and conveiniently it works for seizures :)

I hope your able to find lots of answers and make some new friends along the way. The short time I've been here I've found everyone very helpful and kind and some are really funny :D

Take care! Abi ;)

Welcome to cwe. It's not whining, its gaining knowledge!

I don't know anything about the med you are taking but you are in the right place for getting feedback from others.

Everyone is different and has different seizure triggers; journaling is the best way to figure out what is setting yours off. I track sleep, meals, meds, stress, moods, phys activity, etc, etc...alot!

Hi Old Holbz, welcome to CWE!

Epilim is also known as Sodium Valproate and Depakote, so you may be able to get more information by searching under those names. The site cat the link below can be good for providing user info, including what the med is taken for (it's also used for bipolar) what dose, how long the person has been on it, and what they've experienced during that time: http://www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=18723&name=DEPAKOTE

Keep in mind that people react very idiosyncratically to any given med, and folks also have different standards for what side effects they consider tolerable. There are also quite a few anti-seizure meds out there, so if you find the Epilim side effects to be problematic, don't hesitate to ask your doc about alternatives.

Best,
Nakamova
