Have been taking 300 Mg of Dilantin daily for a number of years for a Gran Mal Seizure. Until recently no problems, then in the last week, my wife said she was talking to me and I did not answer and just stared off. About the same time was having lunch with a friend and he noticed me staring off and then getting up and ordering another meal and drink, none of which I remember. Only after my wife mentioned the first episode did he relate to his wife about the lunch issue. Any ideas? I plan to see my Dr. this week.

You could be having absence seizures. I've been having them since around 6th grade, and they're extremely similar to that. I stare off into space and it takes me a while to respond or I don't respond at all. There have also been incidents where I did something I don't remember doing (like standing outside of the car while the door is open and my mom telling me to get in but all I did was stand there and nod. I remember it where I was having an absence but I got in the car right away, but apparently I was standing for a about 15 seconds). Do you get a weird feeling? The only way I can think to describe them is the way it feels when you're going up or down in an elevator, but it's also in my head. It's just a weird fuzzy feeling. Do you get that? I'm, of course, not a doctor, so you should definitely ask your doctor about it. I hope this helped!

Don't remember a thing about incident with wife. She said she asked me if I saw stars and I replied "lots of them". The other incident. I remember starting back to the table and seeing my drink cup on table and wondering why I had another one, but nothing else. Kept wondering why I was short of money in my wallet until I heard his story.

I've never seen stars while having an absence seizure, but these do sound a lot like them. Especially the cup thing. I've had incidents where I couldn't figure out why I was doing what I was doing, and then going "oh, yeah! That's why." after the seizure passed. Maybe you could read up about them and see if they're anything like what you're having, and then see what your doctor says.

I'm no expert, but sounds more like complex partial seizures, especially the incident when you were having lunch with your friend.

I agree with masterjen, it does sound like you might be having complex partials.
My seizures are pretty much under control at the moment but for a while they weren't under control. Before I got my seizures under control I used to have mainly auras, simple/complex partials. I would get an aura which was usually followed by a complex partial once I had the aura I wouldn't remember anything until I came out of the seizure.

Some times I'd have them at home on my own & had to go by what I remembered or if anything was out of place. But if I had them in front of someone familiar with my seizures eg parents, friends they'd say I might be staring into space or do strange things.

Have you mentioned what's happening to your neurologist/Dr?
