Hi everyone, I have had epilepsy for 46 years(since age 17). I am taking antibiotics for a bladder infection. As most of you know, some antibiotics cause seziures. I was wondering if there is a antibiotic that doesn't cause a problem with seziures.I take Dilantin for the seziures.Do antibiotics lower the dilantin level in my blood stream?.Should I take an extra dilantin to keep the the dilantin up?

Hi Jody,

The following antibiotics can increase Dilantin levels in your blood: rifampin (Rimactane, Rifadin, Rifamate) or doxycycline (Doryx, Vibramycin, Adoxa, and others).

Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) can decrease Dilantin levels in your blood.

There are certain antibiotics that increase the risk of an individual getting seizures. These include isoniazid, lindane, metronidazole, nalidixic acid and penicillin. If you take a vitamin B6 supplement along with these antibiotics that can reduce the chances of a seizure. If you have kidney problems you are more likely to suffer from seizures when taking these antibiotics.

Did you have a particular antibiotic in mind? You can usually check on line to see if it interacts with your med in any way. And even better -- ask your doctor and your pharmacist to check for any interactions as well.
