Hello all, I am very new and very scared. I had my first and I hope last seizure on Tuesday afternoon, my kids found me in a bad way and called 999, I can only remember the ambulance men leaning over me asking me questions. I have no idea what happened, my sons say I was dribbling and shaking violently my eyes rolling and they couldnt rouse me what ever they did. 6 hours later in A & E didn't reveal much, except I am was in extreme pain all down my back and down the back of my legs, I can barely walk two days later. I saw my GP today (had a panic attack in the waiting room thinking it would happen again) dr is ordering more tests! What I would like to ask people who know is: Is the muscle pain normal after a seizure? Is it possible I could only have one? My heart goes out to all of you living with this on a daily basis as I am struggling after two days x

Hi Lorna, welcome to CWE!

Sorry you had a seizure, I know they are scary, and you must feel very confused.
Is the muscle pain normal after a seizure?
Yes, very much so I'm afraid. It does go away, but in the meantime be gentle with yourself. Sleep on your back rather than your stomach. Take your favorite pain reliever in moderation. Your doc can do ultrasound or x-rays if you're worried.
Is it possible I could only have one?
Absolutely, though the tough thing is there's no way to know for sure. About 2% of adults have a seizure at some time during their life. Two thirds of these people never have another one. Each individual has a seizure "threshold", and for most people that threshold is never crossed.

Your doctor will probably order an EEG and possibly an MRI too. Depending on what those show, you may have a better sense of what any next steps might be. In the meantime, it can help if you can remember anything that might have been a stressor or trigger in the days or hours preceding your seizure, or if you've ever had any unusual sensations (spaciness, twitching, confusion). Triggers can be anything from fatigue to low blood sugar, hormones, food sensitivities, electrolyte imbalance, illness/infection, flashing lights, etc.

I hope you feel better soon.

Best,
Nakamova

Hello, and welcome to the forums!
I'm sorry you had to go through that. But yes, it's totally normal to be sore after a seizure. All your muscles were contracting and releasing repeatedly during your seizure, so it's kind of like a workout. lol. I've had one gran mal seizure (I usually get simple partials), but at that point in time my simple partials were so frequent and intense that I was ALREADY sore on the right side of my body. Then I had a gran mal and I think I was sore for another week after that.
I think it is possible to only have one, depending on what caused it. A friend of my brother's had a seizure in high school, and it seemed like a one-time event and then he had another one a couple years later. I don't know if he had any more after that. Some people just have a higher seizure threshold than others. If you do have epilepsy, it's possible that when you figure out your trigger(s), you just have to avoid those things and you'll never get a seizure again. But it's also possible that you'll have more. That's why the tests are good. Good luck and keep us posted.

ETA: LOL Nakamova answered while I was typing and we both said almost the same thing.

Muscle pain is VERY normal. It's mentally as well as physically exausting. For me it typically lasts for a day or so.
