I've seen GP about my lab tests. Yes I am hypothyroid, she took 2 other thyroid tests, also checking my antibodies. I am low in B-12 and got a shot for that and told to supplement. My pulse is low, thus the arrhythmia increase. It's another week before I see her again with these results. Been a long time diagnosing all this and getting it treated.

During this past month I've had several times of "seeing" odd things, at night while asleep/awaking. When I get light in the room those odd things I see are explained by the smoke detector light, the closet or entry doors. But 2 nights ago I awoke in a huge rush, sensing something in the room with me, saw a huge tall figure standing at bedside; he had one of those little green lights (like a book light) on his forehead and was holding great big oblong white pillow as if to smother me.

I shouted (or thought I did) who are you, what do you want, then screamed help a couple times (or thought I did because DH in another room did not hear me). Putting on the light I find the light was the smoke alarm (little green round light)and pillow was the white oblong door beneath the light. My feeling of terror persisted. I had to sleep in another room with lights on.

Next day my jaw is sore (not terribly unusual for me to clench my teeth in the night) and my neck is stiff on one side (also not unusual for me cause I sleep with 2 pillows propped up on account of acid reflux symptoms. Looking into things, I see that thyroid imbalances can cause night terrors and I am as of now still untreated for this. I do remember the terror vividly. I've never had these types of seizures before. How do I tell what caused this?

How do I tell what caused this?
Since night terrors can caused by thyroid imbalances as you note, and also potentially by simple partial seizures (in the form of hallucinations), then there's no easy way to pin down the cause. When do you start treatment for the hypothyroid?

In the meantime, you might want to try taking a magnesium supplement. It can help some folks with sleep issues, including muscle tension in the jaw.

i did not know thyroid do this that explains alot,i got hypo thyroid aswel

Elsie,

you know what? I've had my share of Night terrors. you can take or leave what I have to say but in my personal experience most night terrors are the onset of a lucid dream and I've been lucid dreaming pretty much exclusively since I was 17, it started with night terrors but I eventually realized that they were only turning into terrifying experiences because I was afraid of the abnormal mental state. It just doesn't feel normal and that's frightening but when you dream everything you see comes from you, if you allow yourself to be terrified ...well you get something terrifying back. IDK if that's what YOU personally are experiencing but if you get it again try to recall that your own emotional state has a profound impact on what you experience in a dream.

I hope that's some help.

For the B-12 supplement you could try folic acid tablets, no prescription needed. As for the night terrors, I am getting my share at the moment.

Thanks everybody. Reason I'm a little afraid of the cause is when I went to neurologist, she ordered as one of the lab tests the trileptal level, just to see where I'm at since I'm new to her. They did the wrong test, something about metabolite (?) and she said it was very low but didn't know how the wrong test affected the number. I apparently don't need much medicine to control my wonky brain, so she said she'd leave it go, but now that leaves me with an uneasy feeling about it all... old dr. never checked the level of this, said it wasn't necessary. Huh? If this stuff about the low # and wrong test hadn't come up I wouldn't be concerned about it.

The other strange things I experienced after I'd been asleep for a while were just oddities, like a reflection of moonlight off the white door rising up rising up rising up and me not able to focus on it properly. But this last one was the only one with terror involved. It is just very unsettling to me because I have been seizure free since the 1980's and I drive... and never had this type before.

Google hypothyroid and night terrors, the connection does exist.

I have to go back to Dr. next Wed. and hopefully the other test would be back and she will prescribe. It has stretched into a very long time getting this treated.

You might be right about what one is thinking about sleep; I was annoyed with Husb. for not being real supportive with this and we'd had words...he really needs my help and it's been hard for him as well since I've been struggling, but all that was on my mind.

On a good note, the B12 I think is helping me feel better. What does folic acid have to do with B12? I must remember the magnesium too.
