Hopefully

Yesterday I was prescribed warfarin for the Hughes / Antiphospholipid syndrome, which I suffer from.
(sticky blood)

The symptoms have been fuzzy head, at times not being able to think clearly.

Some epileptic fits, small vacant spells for which I have been prescribed Lamotridgine for over 10 years. The dose gradually increasing to 300mgs twice a day.

Although the neurologist had all my notes.He failed to recognise this condition.

I wish, I had been informed about this condition before I had a heart attack.
anyway I hope this may help someone. I know their are lots of causes for epilepsy, but It maybe this could be one of them.

Symptoms (For me anyway)

Epilepsy
Dizziness
DVT
late miscarriages
low birth weight premature baby.
Mitral valve prolapse.
Heart attack

From my other post thankyou the warfarin and Lamotrigine are not contraindicated, it seems.

The diagnosis for this condition is a cheap blood test. Can't wait to tell the neurologist.

Not sure if I will be able to come off the lamoridgine but feel so much better anyway.( Have been on blood thinning injections) I haven't had a fit since!

so very happy that you have found a solution to the problem, daisyd. That's great! I do hope everything continues to work out for you! Keep in mind though that neurologists -- while we THINK that they should know everything -- sometimes focus more on what's going on in our brains that what might be going on in our blood, such as it being too sticky......:rolleyes::eek: Sad, but true.

Thanks for that information. It'll help a lot of people. I, myself, will ask my doc to add the bloodtest next time I have tests run.

A site about Lamictal does indicate that warfarin and Lamictal might not play well together:

"Interactions:

Lamotrigine may have negative interactions with some antacids, antihistamines, antidepressants, antibiotics, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Other medications such as HIV protease inhibitors (indinavir), ritonavir (Norvir), ipratropium (Atrovent), isoniazid, phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton), nefazodone, metronidazole, acetazolamide (Diamox), propranolol (Inderal), rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane), and warfarin may also adversely react with lamotrigine. Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) may decrease the amount of lamotrigine absorbed by the body."

It doesn't say what an adverse reaction would be, but it's worth making sure your doc is on top of this. (I know doctors are supposed to cover all the bases, but not all of them do for some reason).

I hope you continue to feel better. Sounds like you're finally on the right track.
 
Lamotridgine / Warfarin

I think that Warfarin can probably effect lamotridgine or the otherway round it may be a problem and I might need more frequent blood tests,to check that my blood isn't getting too thin.

But I have a very good pharmacist who I know wouldn't give me the warfarin if it would be a problem for me. (I actually trust him more than the Doctors.)

Your Gp Should know about it. Hughes syndrome ( Antiphospholipid syndrome )and the blood tests used to diagnose this condition are
2 blood tests Anticardiolipin and Lupus Anticoagulant
You could photocopy some information from the Hughes web site

Please let me know how you get on these symptoms are awful.

Daisy, Are you also on plaquenil? I am on plaquenil and daily low-dose aspirin for my antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. I don't have to be on coumadin because I haven't had a documented clotting event. I have felt much better since being on the plaquenil too and am glad that you are feeling better.
 
Warfarin

No just Warfarin, Clexane injections to start with now stopped will be going on Asprin with Warfarin later this month.

I feel great when my blood is at the right level . Thankyou
 
You might check out the APS Foundation website. My rheumatologist said that it is recommended that people with aps take plaquenil now because aps is an autoimmune disorder. The plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) will help control the antibodies which, in turn, can further lessen symptoms and allow your blood thinner dosage to be lowered in some cases. There's quite a few studies out there on how it works in people with aps and you could find them on the website or if you did a search for antiphospholipid antibodies and plaquenil.
