Experiences with medications are different for everyone. Your neuro should give you instruction on how to wean off Dilantin (whether tapering doses is recommended or not) and start Vimpat and the schedule for when to do each step.
 
Fully agree 100% with Bernard, I've gone through so many changes with epilepsy medications all my life (since infancy) all I can say is work with the medical neurologist or medical epileptologist that is taking care of your case.
