Just wondering if those with nocturnal seizures also grind their teeth.

Sometimes I

do. It depends on the type of seizure I'm having that night.....t/c, myoclonic, electrographic or focal......

So far as I know, I only do it during the dad-blamed t/c's.:paperbag:

Keep in mind though, I haven't had a t/c in 6 1/2 years now. And the electrographic seizures are simply the brain seizing all night, with no physical manifestations at all, so I don't grind my teeth at all during them. The most likely time would be during a t/c or focal, I think......

I grind my teeth pretty bad and these days I only have Complex Partials (nocturnal). I was just wondering if there is a correlation.

FYI: A chiropractor can actually fix TMJ by adjusting the jaw. I did this a few years ago and it did work and I should probably make an appointment. Meanwhile the dentist charged me big bucks to create a mouth guard :ponder: which I very rarely even used.

I tried

the mouth guard thing. YUCK. I can't stand having anything on my face, and anything in my mouth is just as bad. I felt like I was choking, even though I logically knew I wasn't. Man, was my husband mad at me for wasting that money.....But he saw my reaction first hand, so he didn't stay mad too long...

“Electrographic seizure”

Hello Meetz1064,

Sorry KelVarQ for changing the subject but Meetz1064 what is an “electrographic seizure”?

As for grinding teeth during night times I am not sure, but I know I do it a lot during the day but think it is to do with stress rather than anything else. :paperbag:

Thank you for your time
Kind Regards
Debbie

I found that when I first switched to Lamictal I clenched my teeth at night. I don't think I was grinding my teeth though.

Here's a

good definition:

electrographic seizures are simply the brain seizing all night, with no physical manifestations at all

Trust me, you wake up TOTALLY EXHAUSTED, as if you never went to bed. And wonder why the **** you did. :paperbag: URG. As long as I take certain supplements, and watch my diet, these are now under much better control, but when I slip up, they slip in........occasionally. They make me GROUCHY.

the electrographic seizures are simply the brain seizing all night, with no physical manifestations at all,

Meetz, I don't know if this is the same but it reminds me of when I was in the hospital doing my EEG and my neuro came in Friday and said, "You will definitely not make it though the weekend without seizing since there's a lot of activity. So be careful of your surroundings and try to stay in the bed." He was right and I ended up having 2 on Sunday (one TC).

Also, that's wonderful about not having the T/C's for so long. Keep up the good work!

You know, i do the same. Sometimes i'm aware of it because my teeth creak from being crushed together. I think i do grind my teeth as well though, cos i had one smash in my mouth once. Not nice when i woke up lol.

Not sure at all whether it's because of nocturnal seizures.

grinding

I have been a night grinder as far back as I can remember. My jaws are in spasms most all the time. I take 5HTP and a calcium magnesium supplement. TC's are my seiz. of choice at night when I am asleep Seizure free for over 6 years. Back in the nineties, I went through the maxo. whats his face specialist, and braces. Mostly I filled the pockets of specialists. The teeth grinding continues. I wear a night guard from the drug store, as opposed to the one from dentists that costs a house payment. My dental insurance is not that good! I also listen to music and relaxation before I snooze. The medical profession treated my symptoms, the aftermath - not really solving the problem.

I clench and grind my teeth all the time... but worse during my nocturnal seizures. I wear a mouth guard at night and it helps for the most part.

Gigi

You said you have muscle spasms in your jaws and that you're taking a calcium magnesium supplement. Have you considered splitting them up, and increasing the amount of magnesium that you take??? It does wonders for muscle spasms, aches, etc.......also migraines.

meetz1064:

How much magnesium can I take a day? Actually what I take is Calcium 1000 mg, magnesium 400 mg, zinc 25 mg, w/ D 600 IU. combined in one tablet 2x daily. Do I need to up the magnesium? :ponder:

My naturopath recently put me on magnesium. What she did was start me a 150 mg and to up it every 2 or 3 days until your bowel movements are too loose. Then drop it back to the previous dosage.

I have to concentrate on not grinding my teeth. I used to fall out of the bed when more often on different drugs and have more night time seizures. zonegran was the worse.

I chew on the inside of my lip to keep from grinding my teeth.

I chew my lips absently during the day and clench my teeth without knowing it. several times during my EEG the lady had to keep asking me to stop clenching.

I tried the mouth gaurd thing, but found i couldnt breathe with it. I grind my teeth alot during the night, and when I have an absence or a tonic, chad says he can hear my teeth creak and grind from me seizing.

Is the grinding stress related? Most likely! I grind my teeth and think about not grinding alot. I do bite my cheeks on the inside during nocturnal seizures somtimes. Im real thankfull that Im 217 days seizurefree today. My control has been achieved using a combination of anticonvolsant drugs,( Keppra 1250mg B.I.D. and Trileptal 300 mg at bedtime) plus Nerofeedback treatments twice each month. I also smoke Marijauna daily! This combination works for me. It sure wont work for everyone! Its our job to find out what will work best for us. Never give up and you will find it in the end. My life is a testmonie to this. I looked for my answer for a very long time.

I'm a major teeth grinder did the Chiropractic thing for years and the mouth guard. Even with all that I chipped my first tooth last night. I haven't had a seizure in 7 months but the tooth was already cracked and well I think the holiday nuts finished it off.

Oh, Flinnigan

that sucks a hill o'beans! I'm sorry......I hope the dentist is open tomorrow! Maybe you can save the tooth by putting it in some milk, and the dentist might be able to reattach it??
