I have joined here because my daughter (10) decided to scare the daylights out of me by having a seizure at the Dr's office. She has been sick with mono and was still having a horrible sore throat. So I took her in to see what was going on with her. She was not running a fever either. The Dr decided to do a blood test which was just a finger prick. The nurse pricked her finger and walked out of the room. She was sitting on the exam table talking to me. She got down and walked over to the chairs and sat next to me. We were talking for about a minute and the last thing she said was that sort of hurt. She then put her head down on my arm, then I felt her head sort of drop down a little more and she was jerking around. I asked her if she was ok and she didnt respond. I saw her hands curled up funny and all stiff looking and she was jerking them around funny. I yelled for help and was helping her down to the floor. As we were almost totally down I was able to grab the door knob and open the door up and yell again. Then the Drs and a couple of nurses came in. The jerking was still going on a little when they came in and then she qas just laying there totally out of it for several minutes. She was a horrible shade of gray. She has little memory of what happened. Now, she has never down that before, she has had finger peick before, needles before from shots and even stitches to her lip. The Dr does not seem too concerned about it and says he thinks this is her reaction to the finger prick. I am just scared beyond anything about this at the moment still and not sure what to think or if I should have her tested. I have never seen anyone have one before or have much experience dealing with this and not sure what to think.
Does this sound like a reasonable explaination?? I have never had a reason to doubt the Dr, but this is bugging me and just not sure what to think of the whole situation.

Warm welcome to CWE.

Have you noticed anything in her past that might show potential seizure activity? There are many types of seizures.

Epilepsy is generally diagnosed after more than one seizure, because we are all potentially prone to having a (one off) seizure.

Could be that her blood sugar plummeted and caused a reaction?

As a parent I would keep a close eye on her and record anything unusual, and I can only speak for me but I would go back to doc and talk to him about it.

Trusting the CWE members will have feedback for you and fully understand that this is not sitting well with you and truly empathize.

Finger prick......I doubt that. Hopefully it has more to do with how sick she was. Everyone is prone to a one off seizure.

A fever and/or infection can be a common seizure trigger -- especially the one-off variety. And mono is especially stressful in its effects on the body. In addition to the depressed immune system and fatigue/weakness that characterize the illness, the inflamed throat can affect sleep, and the lack of appetite can affect blood sugar.

As noted by Chaz above, the standard protocol is to only diagnose epilepsy after at least 2 seizures have occurred, so at this point no intervention needs to be done. However, it is worth keeping an eye out for any other unusual symptoms. Here's hoping your daughter's seizure was a one-time thing!
