I don't generally go out and say "go here, go there." But I'm in a bit of a shock right now, and I don't know how many of you here in the US know of a supermarket by the name of Meijer. Please keep in mind, I hadn't been in Meijer in over a year until the last couple of days.

I walked in the other day to pick up a couple of pork loins--they were on sale for a LOW LOW price, and it's something I can get EVERYONE to eat. Picked up 3 of them (about 17 pounds) for about $26.

Imagine my SHOCK when I walked through the produce section, and there was ORGANIC fruits and vegetables EVERYWHERE for really DECENT prices. And the ORGANIC fresh herbs??? Cheap?? I about fell over!!

Today, I went back to pick up a few more pork loins--I'll stick them in the freezer for the next couple of months--and decided to wander the store a bit. Hello? There's Betty Crocker Gluten Free Baking Mixes? Brownies, Muffins and the like? Not to mention ORGANIC spices, ORGANIC rice milk, and I can't even remember what else. No, there's not any gluten free flour, but I'd bet they'd get it if I asked....just from looking at that one aisle.

I have NEVER seen a store in this area (and Lafayette's NOT particularly small) with this large of an organic choice. Hmmmm, this may help me out a lot.

How many of you have a supermarket like this? I know of the Whole Foods supermarkets.....and I finally found out that there are 2 of them....about 80 miles from me. But how many of you have any supermarkets in your own town with a decent organic selection? I am TOTALLY IN SHOCK right now....op:

Here in the Tulsa, Ok area, we have Reasor's Grocery store. Like your find there, Reasor's carries a good selection of organics: fresh produce, eggs, canned goods, a wide assortment of gluten-free products, both mixes, flours, and breads, pastas, crackers. There are organic spices, cooking oils, mayonnaise, and it goes on and on. One of their stores in a more rural area features home-grown produce during the summer.

Best thing is, they are available online. You can fill out a grocery list, and one of their shoppers will shop for you; all you do is run in, pay the bill and you're out with your selections. If they stop carrying something you're used to using(specialty or not), or you need something specific, there's a section for you to fill out and it goes straight to the store you shop at. They have a dietician on staff.

The very best thing? This store is less than a mile from my house! It doesn't get any better than that for us.

I am having a brain fog moment but there is a well known manufacturer (can't think of who it is at the moment) who is going to make gluten free products. They have no plan on advertising because they know the word will get out without them having to do any marketing.

If gluten sensitivity has increased 400% in the past 50 years, I do believe that people are beginning to shop differently. Thankfully the supermarkets and manufacturers are beginning to listen.

All well and good in America, but the UK seems very slow to catch on. Does anyone know of any good gluten free food producers in england (preferably essex/ south east/ or available online)? My local supermarkets (2 tesco's a sainsburys and an asda) aren't great, my closest store (the larger tescos) does a very small selection of GF foods, basically bread and cakes, the smaller tescos and the asda(wal-mart) do nothing, and the sainsbury's has a slightly larger selection than any others but is an hours bus ride each way across town from me, and even then it is still a relatively small selection compared to what you over in the US are talking about...we do have a waitrose opening near me (30 min bus ride) in 2 months time, anyone in the uk know what their gluten free selection is like-apparently it will be the largest waitrose in the country...any answers much appreciated. (My 7 yr old son is coeliac(think it's spelt celiac in us))

Most of the large supermarket chains where I live carry some organic produce and have at least part of one isle dedicated to so called health foods (gluten free, organic, rice/almond/soy milks, etc.).

HEB's Central Market is pretty decent.

I'm pretty spoiled in my part of the world. There are a ton of organic & gluten-free options, including at least five Whole Foods within a 10-mile radius, and a host of smaller specialty stores that are pretty great. My brother just developed a gluten sensitivity, so I've been checking out the regular supermarket chains as well and they all offer gluten-free products. And two local pizza places offer gluten-free crust...

Well I say there lays a business opportunity for someone in England to produce Gluten Free products.

We did have one on the boards here recently that was UK based. It was a online store. I didn't take much notice, because I don't need to ship from there. Anybody remember where that link was?
