So at the beginning of each hockey season, the higher ups in the club receive a rulebook with any changes and what to expect in the coming season (some changes are barely noticeable, others stand out like a broken toe (depends on what the FIH do).

This year, one of the changes relates to the in game suspensions. A few years ago the rule was changed so that a warning came with an automatic 2 minute suspension. This is still the same and is a real pain in the ass, especially if you are speaking to a teammate and the ref overhears you.

This year however, the league is managing things behind the scenes with a demerit points system.

a 2 minute minor suspension doesn't incur a demerit point

a 5 minute suspension incurs 5 demerit points

a 10 minute major suspension incurs 7 demerit points

a Game Misconduct incurs an automatic league suspension until the judiciary hearing.

One of the big things in field hockey is with a suspension regardless of the seriousness, you leave your team 1 man down for that length of time. I have copped a few 2 minutes and a 10 minute suspension for dissent towards the referee (it wasn't even directed at him! made for some hilarious banter after the match) If you cop a game misconduct, your team is one field player down for the rest of the game.

You can't be penalised twice for the same thing with the same severity, but you can be for different things (say a tripping penalty then an unnecessary body contact penalty might give you 2 x 2 minute penalties but if you tripped twice in the same game, the next penalty would be a minimum 5 minute penalty)

I'm interested to see how this'll play out, especially after the events of last season where our goaltender was sent off for 10 minutes for backchatting (you don't get an extra field player in this instance which left me as the goaltender unpadded until he returned)

Sounds like red-carding in soccer. Y'all better behave. :)

It actually is very similar, however there are no offsides - meaning that slower teams can alter their playing tactics to have a "higher" wing player to gain field distance. The other good thing that separates us from soccer is that if you are deemed to have taken a dive to get your team a penalty, you'll be sent off so no one does it unless they are seriously hurt.
