Other than the EEG itself, what happens during a Video EEG?

Hi again!

Sorry to bug you with yet another question, but you guys have been so helpful , so I thought you wouldn't mind another!

Having a Video EEG at the end of the year. Other than the obvious, what happens while you're there, like if you have to have other tests, like a SPECT for example. Do they unhook you or wait to the end or???

Thanks a million!

Hi Scaredycat.

The hospital where you are having your Video EEG should give you some information on what to expect as well as what to bring & what to wear.
It will depend on the epitiologist or neurologist as to how much they lower your Anti Epilepsy meds or what they do trigger a seizure.

I had my Video EEG in November 2010 I was on 3 meds Tegretol, Keppra & Neurontin. I hated being on the Neurontin so the epitiologist took me straight of the Neurontin & kept me of it. They wanted to try to bring on a complex partial so they didn't completely take me of the meds but just lowered the Tegretol & Keppra by a larger amount.

My Mum was with me the whole time to look out for any seizures & alert the staff if I did have a seizure & wasn't able to press the button myself.
If I had a seizure my Mum or myself had to press the button to alert the staff & they would've put ceretec into me then send straight of for a PET scan. I think the PET scan had to be done within a certain amount of time after the ceretec was injected.

Even though I had my meds reduced & sleep deprived myself I only ended up having a couple of auras which were earlier in the morning & not enough for the drs to do a PET Scan.

Each hospital is different so the neurology ward at the hospital where you are having your testing may be a bit different.

I had mine in May of this year. All situations are different, but for mine after I was all hooked up, they didn't take my meds away the first night. they did start giving me blood thinning injections (in the stomach!) since you can't really move around much. You are pretty much stuck in the bed unless you have to use the bathroom, and then I had to have a nurse with me since you off of the camera at that time. When anything showed up on my tracings, a nurse would come into the room, so I never had to worry about pressing the button. The second day my meds were stopped and the third day I was sleep deprived. I finally had activity on the fourth day. My doctor told me that for whatever reason, the fourth day is the charm. Also remember, you aren't doing anything other than sitting in the bed, so you don't have your day to day stress levels. I did have an MRI after all the electrodes were removed. Best of luck!
