possible nocturnal seizures?
Ok first of all let me startby saying I haven't been diagnosed and I'm telling my neurologist who I see for migraine in a few days
Now I'm not sure if you can even have seizures while dreaming but I've been having what I call nightmares about a phobia of mine...bugs
I'll explain the dreams if you ask but I've had 5 so far and the all end the same way with my head jerking to one side repeatedly waking me up always the same side always the same theme in the dream
I was wondering if this sounds like any type of seizure or if anyone had similar experiences
Please share any experiences you think may be helpful

Hi Pandoralee,

Firstly you can get head pain with epilepsy and if you do have epilepsy....what your going through sounds very similar to my temporal lobe epilepsy which also puts you in a stage of autism besides and when I wake mine whole body is always on the left side plus I have stages and this may sound stupid but I feel like i'm sinking deeply in the mattress...it's so hard to describe.
When you see your neuro I suggest asking for an EEG but where your asleep not awake, as they may pick up on any issue which is happening better.

You may find this link useful to read on nocturnal epilepsy and it's stages.

Are you having the SAME dream every time?

In my experience with partial seizures in my sleep, I would usually be seen doing the same thing. That is why it was deemed a seizure. The flip side is that I wasn't remembering the movements, nor any dreams, themselves. There are some things that make it sound like a seizure and othersthat don't. I would lean towards them not being seizures, but being a reoccurring dream. I'm no expert, just trying to give you an educated guess, so take that for what it's worth.

Good luck with getting things figured out.

Not the exact same dream no different people different things happening but it always turns to there being a spider or something and I start getting panicked terrified I have a phobia and then it will somehow get on the left side of my face/neck it like tingles like there's an actual bug crawling on it I start freaking out and my head start jerking it goes black and I wake up
Only on two I woke up actually jerking around though
The other ones go black I wake up and my neck is sore and stiff

With your head jerking it sounds like you have some sort of seizure occurring.

Well I go to see my neurologist tomorrow I'm going to ask him about and explain every weird thing that happened they also do sleep medicine there so I'm sure he'll be able to tell me what it is even if it's not seizures
The only thing is I don't want a bunch of tests done but what has to be done has to be done I guess I would rather know for sure
Wish me luck

So a partial seizure in my sleep could look like a dream? My husband swears I woke him last night and asked if he was ok. I have no memory of it. Could doing things like that be a seizure?

Hi Pandoralee,

Best of luck and please update we on how you appointment goes :)

Hi wants2know,

It could be a partial seizure but i'm not a doctor to say so, experiencing so much myself but this info explains quite abit with how the mind works.

Simple Partial Seizures

People who have simple partial seizures do not lose consciousness during the seizure. However, some people, although fully aware of what’s going on, find they can’t speak or move until the seizure is over.

They remain awake and aware throughout. Sometimes they can talk quite normally to other people during the seizure. And they can usually remember exactly what happened to them while it was going on.

However, simple partial seizures can affect movement, emotion, sensations, and feelings in unusual and sometimes even frightening ways.

Emotions: A sudden feeling of fear or a sense that something terrible is about to happen may be caused by a simple partial seizure in the part of the brain which controls those emotions.

In rare cases, partial seizures can produce feelings of anger and rage, or even sudden joy and happiness.

Sensations: All five senses — touch, hearing, taste, smell, and sight — are controlled by various areas of the brain.

Simple partial seizures in these areas can produce odd sensations such as a sense of a breeze on the skin; unusual hissing, buzzing or ringing sounds; voices that are not really there; unpleasant tastes; strange smells (also usually unpleasant); and, perhaps most upsetting of all, distortions in the way things look.

For example, a room may suddenly seem narrower, or wider, than it really is. Objects may seem to move closer or get farther away. Part of the body may appear to change in size or shape.

If the area of the brain involved with memory is affected, there may be disturbing visions of people and places from the past.

Sudden nausea or an odd, rising feeling in the stomach is quite common. Stomach pain also may, in some cases, be caused by simple partial seizures.

Episodes of sudden sweating, flushing, becoming pale, or having the sensation of gooseflesh are also possible.

Some people even report having out of body experiences during this type of seizure. Time may seem distorted as well.

In many ways, our usual, comfortable sense of familiar things and places may be disrupted by a simple partial seizure.

Well-known places may suddenly look unfamiliar. On the other hand, new places and events may seem familiar or as if they’ve happened before, a feeling called déjà vu.

Simple partial seizures can also produce sudden, uncontrolled bursts of laughter or crying.

The only thing is I don't want a bunch of tests done but what has to be done has to be done I guess I would rather know for sure
Wish me luck

It took a 72 hour EEG to diagnose my simple partial seizures. The EEG came back normal (normal for someone who was awake, yet I had no memory of the event), but the video was able to show that there was seizure activity. Some testing like this may be necessary.

My neurologist is not concerned at all says they're definitely not seizures because I can remember what's happening and don't do anything typical of seizures such as wettingmyself
Didn't give me any alternatives says they're just dreams and nothing to worry about
Still feel like something is wrong and no one believes me but he's the doctor so I can't really argue

Hello Pandoralee,

Thanks for updating we on your visit...reading your post about your neuro saying you don't urinate...I didn't for quite a few years with my grandmal but as they got worse that's when smells and incontinence started occurring, people don't always have that issue straight away.

If you feel like there's more going on and your not getting satisfaction from your neuro...i'd go for a second opinion to make double sure.

I'll second his opinion. My wife hasn't urinated during any of hers.
Remember there are other doctors out there. A good doctor won't discount your opinion. You know your body best.

Wish I could go to a different doc but he's the only one in the area who takes Medicaid
Since my grandma is driving me around for now and doesn't think they're anything more than dreams she won't drive me anywhere else
I don't have the money to self pay so I'm kinda stuck
He did say if it continued and became more frequent or bothersome he could rum some tests but he acted like it would be a waste of time
So now it's just a waiting game to see what happens which from what I've read could be dangerous if it is epilepsy and it progresses to day time but it's just something I have to wait and see for now
Thank you all for your opinions and support it means a lot to me
I'll keep the thread updated if there's any developments

Thanks :)

Hi Pandoralee,

He maybe the only one who takes medicad but in the states there are some specialists for different issues who will treat you without insurance according to the area...I know some rheumatologists do it plus it's worth looking into, as none of we know what the future holds.

Well I hope what your going through doesn't progress to anything serious concerning seizures...and your welcome to our opinion plus it will be nice to hear from you on a regular basis. :hugs:

Ok so I'm not convinced that it's just me acting out my dream as I don't do it any other time with any other dream
I'm considering the possibility of PNES
At the time my psychiatrist suggested that since I was under extreme stress
My grandma had been in the hospital with double pneumonia for2weeks it was rough thought she was going to die they had to do a bronchoscopy for her to even start getting better it took her months to recover
But anyway I didn't want to consider PNES at the time not sure why but it makes sense
I was just wondering what you're thoughts might be on the subject

Thanks :)

Hello Pandoralee,

I'm not a doctor to diagnose as you know but just give off my opinion but before I say anything....can I ask you firstly besides your dreams do you also suffer from deja vu?.... and there's a reason for me asking as I've had deja vu so many times over the years :)

Yeah just Friday night I had some very real deja vu
It was so bad my grandma was worried it's like I knew everything that was going to be said even my thoughts it was so weird the worst I've ever had I was worried.
And it hadn't happened before because I asked the people I was with so it was deja vu
Why do you ask?

The reason why I asked is you can get this with Temporal lobe epilepsy and also dreaming and it's worth asking about...i'm adding a link below worth looking at :)
